The sequel to 1986 classic Top Gun is soaring ahead - Paramount studios' top man insists Tom Cruise is on board to hit new heights as an ageing Maverick.

Cruise was thrust onto the A-list thanks to his role as the cocky fighter pilot in Tony Scott's 1986 blockbuster and now movie executive Adam Goodman has confirmed the star is set to don the flight jacket once again.

He let the big news slip during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about a fifth Mission: Impossible film, stating: "We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct."

Goodman adds: "All parties are moving ahead. We've hired Peter Craig to write the script."

Late last year Tom Cruise hinted at the possibility of a sequel.

How come Tom Cruise hasn't grown any older, he looks like he's been frozen in stasis! Go Tom Cruise :)

Supercalifragilisticexbealidoshis, the spelling will be wrong so know need to hound me about it, never spelt it before and it's not on my spell check, not that I use it anyway. I like to keep it real.

With all the cliches and chips on his shoulder covered in the first one maybe he has become an anti- war aging hippy.

I loved Top Gun as a kid. It was one of my favorite movies, and I watched it countless times on video. After graduating and moving away from home, it was about ten years before I saw it again. I couldn't believe how AWFUL it was! The plot didn't make the slightest bit of sense. The story flow was anything but smooth, and the vast number of homosexual overtones that I'd been oblivious to as a youth were distracting and out of place.

Now they want to make a sequel? Who are they going to fight against? The Cold War is over and terrorists don't have fighter planes.

Totally going to nominate Taylor Lautner as the lead actor in this, with Tom Cruise being the craggy, older officer!

It'll only work if they bring back Val Kimer... sadly Val's hair isn't as high as it used to be.

And the way Val looks these days if they try and cover the male leads in oil for a beach volleyball sequence he's more likely to try and eat one of the players.

Just what we need, another movie to glorify war. I've been there. It sucks. The amount of human suffering is too high.

The real question is will they be flying the F35s.

What, a simple cameo isn't enough he has to star in it?

That's 8 bucks I'll be saving.

What's next, a Rain Man sequel?
I don't mind sequels to recent movies - like Jason Bourne or Mission: Impossible - but there's absolutely no need to drag out old hits and add sequels. Top Gun 2? I won't be seeing it.

He's pulled this trick before- it's just that last time it was Paul Newman reprising a character and Cruise as the ingenue in "the Colour of Money." The Colour of Money wasn't as good as the original but it wasn't awful. Expect the same sort of plot - cocky upstart and savvy old guy who hasn't got all his old chops but makes up for it by being wily.
