Liam Fox: Make It Easier To Fire People

Posted: 27/04/2012 11:36 Updated: 27/04/2012 11:42

Former defence secretary Liam Fox has said employment law needs to be changed to make it easier for companies to fire people.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Friday, Fox said the UK economy was in desperate need of growth in order to generate increased revenues.

"Too much recent debate has focused on tax and spend rather than on supply-side reform," he said.

"This is particularly true in the area of labour market regulation.

"Talk to small businesses and they will tell you that they are afraid to take on workers because if they try to fire anyone, even if the employee is unsuitable for the job, they are likely to find themselves in an industrial tribunal, with their lawyers recommending settlement."

Fox, who resigned from the cabinet last year over allegations he allowed his close friend too much access to the Ministry of Defence, said deficit reduction without labour market reform was like "driving with the handbrake on".

Should it be easier for bosses to fire people?

In a stinging attack on his former coalition colleagues, he said: "Resistance to deregulation largely came from the Liberal Democrats.

"Two things need to be pointed out to them. First, that they make up only one sixth – not one half – of the Coalition and must expect that Conservative economic ideas will be dominant.

"Second, that if the economy does not improve, they can expect a very unhappy date in 2015 with the voters, and their antipathy to labour market reform makes this more likely."

Fox has been relatively quiet since he returned to the backbenches, but he is a leading right-winger in the party and Friday's intervention may signal he intends to speak out more in the future as he attempts to rehabilitate his political career.

As a former solicitor and employer, and a current Coservative party member and minor patron, I have to say that it was a good thing that Fox was in effect fired. Not only has he got bad judgment about his own affairs, hes got it about employees.

If an employer can't work out in 1 year and 10 months whether the employer is any good, and if not, then fire without reason, he/she isn't fit to be an employer.

The government has extended to two years the time before which an employee has no rights to complain about dismissal. That applies unless there is trades union membership involved, or race, or religion, or sex discrimination.

Not too difficult for an employer to get it right, is it?

Typical Tory, no social conscience, no empathy for the people whose jobs he'd put at risk, and a poor understanding of economics as well. Lucky for him and us that the Lib Dems in the coalition can stop at least some of the worst of that sort of Tory nonsense. The economy is not in very good shape, we need to increase consumer confidence and encourage those with jobs to feel confident and start to spend again. An even more hire and fire employment system would be a sure fire route to reduced public confidence and a drop in consumer spending.

It is already easy for any competent UK employer to dismiss people either through redundancy or for gross misconduct, capability or some other substantial reason. It is very, very difficult to win a claim for unfair dismissal at a Tribunal. In unfair dismissal claims the Employment Tribunal looks at whether the decision to dismiss came 'within the reasonable bands of the reasonable employer', taking into account that one employer may take one view and another employer may take another view. They don't look at what a 'reasonable employee' might think. What a reasonable person might think 'fair' doesn't come into it. The process is already heavily skewed in favour of employers.

Typical Tory tirade.Put the wind up the proles by handing power back to the bosses.Deregulation, which was got us into our current mess thanks to Labour's fear of the power of the markets and strongly supported by our current government in opposition, is a key element in Tory strategy.Wouldn't they just love to see all the levers of power in private hands of big business?

How much more easier can it get to fire people?

This would be OK , if it were to include, people who lie to obtain work , such as encumbant ploiticians who reneged on practically everything in ther manifesto. As employees of the taxpayer, we should have the power to sack them without appeal.
It sems quite obvious to me , that Mr hunt must have been aware of his employees dealings with News Corp , and as David Cameron took spescial flights to meet with Mr Murdoch on his yacht , it beggars belief, that Mr Hunt did not keep Mr Cameron informed of his `work` regarding the takeover bid.
I think it best , if Mr Hunys employee was formally charged with with an offence, regarding his admitted wrong doing. An open court might be the best place to determine the truth in this matter . Somewhere , where his ex employers would have much more difficulty, concealing the truth.

This is rich from the Weasel dressed as a Fox. Another Shop Steward acting on behalf of Cowboy Employers. Perhaps if he had followed his own advice and sacked Werrity he would still be in a job.

Perhaps he should talk to Cameron about Hunt.

i live in washington state US, i can and have fired at will. Just fired my dispatcher last friday. I can't believ that this is even an issue. I have had employees that have stole, or done a poor job. by firing them i can keep those who do a good job employed.
