Pakistan Baby Born With Three Arms, One Attached To Her Back (PICTURES)

Huffington Post  |  Posted: 27/04/2012 11:48 Updated: 27/04/2012 11:48

A condition that only affects one in a million newborns has left a baby girl in Pakistan with three arms.

The four-day-old baby, who has yet to be named, has two regular arms plus a third attached to her back.

She was transferred to Nishtan Hosptial in Pakistan after her father, Waqar Ahmed, took her to a local clinic after her birth.

Experts are now discussing the practicalities of operating to remove the third arm.

The arm is attached close to her spinal cord.

The incredibly rare condition, called Polymelia, causes an embryo to start developing as conjoined twins. One of the twins fails to develop fully leaving the developed twin with extra limbs.

Although rare, another case recently made the news when a baby boy, Umar Faroog, was born with six legs.

He was successfully operated on and is now recovering in hospital.

This will happen more and more now not only here but also in Afghanistan. It also is happening in Iraq and has been now for 10 years. Lets see what do all these places have in common? I wonder ?

OMG I had no idea. This article only mentions phosphorus but there is no mention of depleted uranium ordnance.

Of coarse the Americans have done a study and nofound no environmental issues ......... yeah right.

I'm not sure this case is directly related, could very well be, nevertheless you raise a very important point on this issue:

Hopefully they can take the extra arms off. I find it distrubing how some comments have been so glib on here. This child's parents must be devastated as any parent is when a child is not born with the right amount of limbs. As for in-breeding, it is clear from the comments they are made out of ignorance and show that abnormality can go further than the physical

There seems to be an awful lot of this happening in Pakistan just now. Although these things do happen, it suggests some environmental cause affecting child development. What are they putting in the water?

It happened in Iraq also just after the US showed up on the scene.

I think war & poverty are the two main suspects. In the Third World, you have shanty towns built around factories spewing out toxic spillage etc, you have kids foraging around rubbish dumps etc. Regarding war & nuclear energy, you can see it from the aftermath of Hiroshima & Chernobyl about human defects & cancer rates.

Poor little baby how sad.

It really does stem from breeding between close relatives ie first cousins etc. That is why it is so prevalent in those countries.

you might be onto something i was thinking the same about interbreeding with the british and their bad teeth..

In-breeding occurs in many other countries & communities, & this condition is rare as it's 'one on a million' as said as above!

Thats why in the west we don't allow inbreeding..

You really do need to research about twin births, including conjoined twins. Mind you with some of the thick comments posted on here, I am not sure about the lack of interbreeding in this country.
