Heathrow Border
Queues at Heathrow have been labelled 'unacceptable'

The long queues at Heathrow have now cleared, but with the Olympic games on the horizon, questions are being asked about the airport's ability to cope with increased traffic.

Immigration Minister Damian Green is to be grilled by MPs about the chronic queues, after another passenger reported having to wait in lengthy queuess to get past passport control.

Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "There is a real problem and the problem has emerged over the last few months.

"I'm not saying we should abandon checks, but it's a choice for the government - you either look at the way you deal with people when they arrive at Heathrow or you recruit more staff.

"This is not just about the Olympics, this is about what happens before and after, it's about Heathrow as a world-class airport and it's about our reputation, and we need to make sure we get it sorted."

UNBELIEVABLE Q's at 5 tonight - 100's stuck the wrong side of passport control - 2 hr wait - roll on the Olympics!!! Embarrassing

The Labour MP said that queues of more than half an hour were not acceptable.

"I would have thought by the time you get off a plane and you've walked a long way from the plane to immigration, half an hour would be a problem.

"Anything from zero minutes and 30 minutes would probably be acceptable but people would expect to get through much quicker."

A spokeswoman for BAA, which owns Heathrow, said last night's long queues, which saw passengers waiting for up to an hour, had cleared by midnight.

Discussing the situation today, she said: "Everything is looking quite good in the immigration halls. Things are moving and we haven't got major queues.

"The Border Force is putting staff where they are needed at the moment."

Alastair Campbell, the former Downing Street communications chief wrote on Twitter was caught up in Thursday night's queues, tweeted: "If this is what Heathrow T5 border queue is like on an average Thursday, Olympic athletes should think about coming soon."

A BAA spokeswoman added: "Immigration is a matter for the Home Office. Immigration waiting times during peak periods at Heathrow recently have been unacceptable and we have called on the Home Office to address the problem as a matter of urgency.

"There isn't a trade-off between strong border security and a good passenger experience - the Home Office should be delivering both."

A Border Force spokesman said: "We will not compromise border security but we always aim to keep disruption to a minimum by using our staff flexibly to meet demand."

No date has yet been announced for Mr Green's appearance before the Home Affairs Select Committee.

Border Force head Brian Moore said: "The vast majority of passengers pass through immigration control quickly. Queues are caused by a number of factors, including incorrect flight manifests or early or late planes which result in bunching.

"The important factor is to have staff that are flexibly deployed in the right numbers at the right times and this is what we always try to do.

"We are working with BAA to monitor arrival schedules and passenger flows for the rest of the weekend."

On the issue of the Olympics, he added: "We are fully prepared to manage busy periods during the Olympics and will be implementing our well-rehearsed plans."

I'm sorry but having routinely been kept waiting by US immigration for in excess of 4 hours I have little sympathy for those Americans who complain about an hour and a half wait.

Of course at least the UK border control officers are polite unlike the poorly trained ill mannered US equivalent.

I have also experienced similar problems when travelling to India but oddly enough this only effects Europeans.

Even more worrying than seeing a bunch of tourists held up at passport control are the problems faced by small businesses who import product and materials via PARCELFORCE (or Parcelfarce as it is now known by many businesses). The average time to clear International commercial Expess parcels through Customs at their so called "International hub" seems to be around 4-5 days. Wether this is the fault of the Customs and Excise unit at the International Hub or just Parcelforce being totally useless is at present a mystery. Parcelforce blaim Customs and excise. Customs and Excise blaim parcelforce. We should be told exactly what the hell is going on at our "National parcel carrier". These delays are effecting small businesses across the country by crippling cash flow due to late component deliveries to many firms who need stuff on time. Frankly there should be no excuse. DHL, UPS etc charge the same for clearing customs but can do so within hours, however to use such independant services makes importing parts far more expensive than using our "National Service". It's time that Parcelforce and the attendant Customs dividion responsible either shaped up or "Shipped out" of the pacrel business.

The Border Agency warned Theresa May that the queues would be hours long but she thought they meant minutes. She's always had problems with the difference between minutes and hours and the number of days in a month. This says something about the calibre of person now appointed to high office.

If the amount of money given to the Border Agency is reduced, then cuts in members of staff have to be made. This means that fewer check in points can be staff. Fewer check in points mean longer queues.

A few months ago the queues were much shorter until Teresa May fell out of her pram because the Border Agency ""managed" the situation.

Now the Border Agency is working to rule, because May could not see the consequence of her actions.

Do we have a safer country? Not a bit of it.

Are our fellow holiday members happy to be standing in queues? Of course not

Are business people from abroad to trade with us happy? Of course not and they will take their trade elsewhere.

It only keeps the Xenophobes and daily wail readers who do not travel happy.

The problem at Heathrow is quite obvious. Why bother having 30+ counters when you only man 5 of them for 4 - 5 international flights bearing a majority of non-EU citizens? I waited for over 2 hours yesterday afternoon and apparently, according to the Antipodean hotline, this has consistently been the case since Thursday as we've trickled back into the country from ANZAC services in Turkey. Yes we're a painful bunch of immigrants stealing your jobs on our 2 year work visa's, but honestly, the BAA need to realize they're running an INTERNATIONAL Airport and cater to those tourist's outside of the EU, because I thought that was the point of holding International events, like, say, the Olympics?

How about Fining the Airlines and the pilots (as with HGV Lorries) for all Passengers that fail Immigration control, and have to be sent back from whence they came.

A really 'novel' idea might be to employ more Border Agency staff, and open up more counters for folk to get checked at. 'Revolutionary' I know, but who knows, it might work ??

Being Britain I suspect deep down the real reason is something more hillarious presently being desperatly brushed under the carpet? probably a case of we have 30+ state of the art counters and in reality the staff to man them, but unfortunatly we can still only open 5 at once because our state of the art, multi million dollar purpose made IT system can only cope with a max of 5 counters on at once without crashing completely.

Despite posts to the contrary we have experienced similar delays in the Us and other places. The reason is always the same. Too few staff, too few x-ray machines for too many passengers. It is soooooo galling to stand in one of those coralled "snake" queues, the ones where you walk or shuffle half a mile in ever decreasing circles to move forward 20 feet, to get to the front and see more than half the Border Force desks empty of staff. The security measures have to stay. The delays don't. Get more of your staff out of their cosy offices UK Border Force and start to do your job properly with some pride and determination.

Keep up the tight check on passport control. Get more staff. We queued for over 2 hours being checked out in the States, but security must take priority.

It's not just passport control but security checks leaving the airport. There were up to 1,000 people waiting at Luton airport with ONE, yes, ONE X-ray machine lane open. They had to open another one for passengers whose flights were boarding. After severe unrest by passengers they opened up 2 more which helped - but why did it have to get to that stage.

A pity nobody listened to Enoch Powell MP in the 1960's. We wouldn't be experiencing these problems. Then the country decides on Tony Blaire who in his wisdom opens the gates. There has been sufficient time to sort Heathrow out. It would appear that this coalition government is all talk and dragging it's heels. Nothing is being sorted. Even the Budget was an utter fiasco.
Deportation, ECHR, NHS, Imigration, Policing, Judicial System and Soft Sentencing, Prison Reform. Lets hope the tanker drivers don't go on strike too. And now we can't handle our major airport just months before the Jublee and the olympics! Theresa May, Osbourne and Cameron get the ' heavies ' to help you out NOW.

Everyone is herded through the cattle grids together. It is a nightmare.I have experienced it several times and if you are elderly it is no joke. They should separate whites and non-whites for a start, then have separate queues for different nationalities. That would sort it A separate official is needed for each queue, but this does not happen due to staff cuts..Another time while waiting for a taxi I saw at least 50 Chinese waved through by the one girl immigration officer as none could speak \English and were arguing with her about their papers and passports.A few minutes later, ditto, with a large group of Sierra Leone immigrants.I was disgusted. This was some years ago,and it is obviously worse than ever now.I have not been abroad for some years, but would never choose Heathrow because of this terrible queuing when I next do go.
