Jeremy Hunt: Leveson Rebuffs Culture Secretary's Request For Early Appearance At Inquiry

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 28/04/2012 08:12 Updated: 28/04/2012 08:48

Embattled Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is facing a lengthy wait to defend himself at the Leveson Inquiry after his request for an early appearance was rebuffed.

Lord Justice Leveson has refused to bring forward Hunt's appearance so that he can answer allegations about his handling of News Corporation's BSkyB takeover bid.

A date has still not been set, but politicians will not be called until mid-May, meaning the Culture Secretary will have to wait at least a fortnight and possibly much longer.

It is also thought that Lord Justice Leveson will not rule on whether Hunt breached the ministerial code, piling additional pressure on David Cameron to order a separate inquiry.

Lord Justice Leveson's response is a setback for the under-fire minister, who has expressed confidence he would be able to show he acted with "scrupulous fairness" when he sets out his full version of events to the inquiry.

He told MPs this week - amid claims that he was a "cheerleader" for News Corporation's attempt to take full control of BSkyB when he was supposed to be acting "quasi-judicially" - he had requested the earliest possible date to do so.

But a spokesman for the inquiry said: "Lord Justice Leveson is of the view that, in the interests of fairness to all, the inquiry should continue with the existing scheduling of his appearance."

Labour stepped up calls for the Prime Minister to call in his independent adviser on ministerial conduct, Sir Alex Allan.

Deputy leader Harriet Harman said: "It was always the case that it was the responsibility of the Prime Minister and his alone to ensure that his ministers adhered to the Ministerial Code.

"He should never have sought to pass that responsibility off to Lord Justice Leveson.

"David Cameron should now face up to his responsibilities as Prime Minister and refer this matter immediately to the Independent Adviser on Ministers' Interests as he should have done at the outset.

"There is no need for Jeremy Hunt to wait to give his evidence to the Leveson Inquiry and he cannot hide behind it. He should come to the House of Commons as soon as possible."

Hunt announced earlier he was handing over text messages and emails relating to the bid to the Leveson Inquiry into media standards.

He said he was "confident" that the release of his emails and texts would show he handled the BSkyB merger process with "total integrity".

Aides confirmed that the submission would include not only messages sent to Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith, who resigned on Wednesday after the exposure of his contacts with a News Corp lobbyist, but also other communications within his Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

I have been disgusted with politics since 1994 when some of my so-called colleagues sold out the Labour party in order to virtually guarantee victory at the next general election. I saw the opportunists and power crazed literally crawl over the corpse of a party they killed from within whilst the former leader wasn't yet cold... That day saw the end of democracy in the UK and highlighted the complete disregard Labour had for the people it was supposed to represent.

Cameron, Coulson, Brookes, Hunt all friendly and past employees of News International. The use of the pals act in highest National Government, another episode of power corrupting your soul and integrity. Cameron would do well to use his Prime Minister's powers and investigate Hunt as quickly as possible. The longer Cameron waits for Leveson the greater the risk of more damaging revelations that would go straight to the heart of government. The silent assassins are waiting in wings, the press and the media are watching like circling vultures. This is the biggest story and it's not going away Cameron will not be able bluff is way out of this one. Get on with it Mr Cameron and respect the overwhelming will of the people.

A bunch of privileged schoolboys messing up and blaming it on each other trying to save their own skin while the country sinks further and further into recession.
Why should they care though, the plebs can suffer as long as the 'posh boys' are OK, that's what daddy always taught them.
JH should go and Cameron should take the consequences, but he will hang on to JH as long as possible who is acting as a sheild to stop Cameron being quizzed about his relationship with Murdoch, Brookes etc.....at least until the local elections are over....trouble is, it wont make any difference people are sick and tired of this incompetent set of idiots who they can't even admit when they're wrong and move on.

Cameron is trying to hide behind the Leveson enquiry that was not set up to question if Ministers may have broken the Ministerial Code. It should not have needed a spokesperson of Leveson to tell him that. Whe you find yourself in a hole....stop digging, maybe they never told him that at Eton.

Dont blame Hunt, blame Cameron. He signed up to the ministerial code of conduct and when he should invoke it he refuses to do it! This is the worst Government I remember and I am 55! Cameron needs Hunt AS A "Firewall" but I feel the revelations from Levison and the Murdoch contacts may have serious consequences for Cameron and his cronies. The next issue I see coming to bite Cameron is the plans to implement regional pay in the NHS. Even his party and The Lib/Dems will not be happy with this. I ,like the rest of the country cannot wait till 2015....if they last that long!.

What a party! How many people do they have willing to take a bullet for the team?Hunt was well known to favour the Murdoch camp after Cable was trapped into expressing his opposition to Murdoch.Hunt is,to my mind,as guilty as Hell.He should do the honourable thing and go quickly.

the rich and powerful will always screw over the workers and the workers let them. We are having our income reduced on a daily basis by the actions of these untouchables. Where is the national champion to lead us out of this? Nowhere in parliament, boardrooms or media organisations. We are crying out for a popular uprising to take back our country before this generations 'establishment' hurtle us back to the 30's.

Getting a little fed of of seeing this man's face , and listening to his bleating on about being innocent!! If he is then so be it but dont they all resign in the end ?
10:43 AM on 04/28/2012
Vince Cable was blatantly biased. Many people who are today saying Hunt should resign on the presumed basis of bias would have been very happy to see Vince Cable do the job instead.

That said, a job that requires judicial or "quasi-judicial" impartiality shouldn't be assigned to politicians in the first place.

The decision on Murdoch's BSkyB takeover should have been handed over to an appointee.

When these Politicians talk about Honesty, Respectability, Honour etc etc - they are thinking in the back of their mind '' Not that which normal people live by, but by those standards set by us corrupt beings''

They then answer questions accordingly - and are thus so convincing ?

The whole damned World is becoming blurred.

You cant even buy pre-packed meat without the wrapping carefully hiding the actual size of the contents and thus giving the buyer the idea that far more is contained inside !

No wonder our progeny are so disrespectful.
