Jeremy Hunt Row: David Cameron Will Act If Culture Secretary Guilty Of Breaking Ministerial Code

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 28/04/2012 12:51 Updated: 28/04/2012 13:36

David Cameron is prepared to consider ordering an investigation into Jeremy Hunt's dealings with News Corporation but not until the Culture Secretary has appeared at the Leveson Inquiry.

The Prime Minister has been resisting demands to call in his independent adviser on ministerial conduct, Sir Alex Allan, insisting it is a matter for Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry into media standards.

However, he is understood to be open to the possibility of a separate inquiry into whether Hunt broke the ministerial code after the Culture Secretary has defended himself in front of Lord Justice Leveson.

The deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, Michael Fallon, said today that the evidence should be "tested" at the Leveson Inquiry.

"If later on, obviously, it looks as if there's something that needs to be investigated under the ministerial code that can be done," he said.

Quick Poll

Will Jeremy Hunt keep his job?

VOTE

It emerged last night that Lord Justice Leveson would not rule on whether Hunt broke the ministerial code.

The Culture Secretary has been accused of acting as a "cheerleader" for News Corporation's BSkyB takeover bid after the Leveson Inquiry published a raft of email exchanges between the company's chief lobbyist and Hunt's office.

Hunt's special adviser, Adam Smith, resigned over the matter this week.

The Culture Secretary is now facing a lengthy wait to defend himself at the Leveson Inquiry after his request for an early appearance was rebuffed.

Lord Justice Leveson has refused to bring forward his appearance so that he can answer allegations about his conduct.

A date has still not been set, but politicians will not be called until mid-May, meaning the Culture Secretary will have to wait at least a fortnight and possibly much longer.

The delay is a setback for the under-fire minister, who has expressed confidence he would be able to show he acted with "scrupulous fairness" when he sets out his full version of events to the inquiry.

He told MPs this week - amid claims that he was a "cheerleader" for News Corporation's attempt to take full control of BSkyB when he was supposed to be acting "quasi-judicially" - he had requested the earliest possible date to do so.

But a spokesman for the inquiry said: "Lord Justice Leveson is of the view that, in the interests of fairness to all, the inquiry should continue with the existing scheduling of his appearance."

Seems the wily old fox since he's withdrawn his bid for the complete takeover of BSkyB has now managed to distract the Leveson Inquiry with this.

How is this for political gobbledygook? "Cameron will not have an enquiry until Jeremy Hunt has appeared at the Leveson Inquiry", yet it appears that "Lord Justice Leveson would not rule on whether Hunt broke the ministerial code".
So, in the end, nobody will know the full truth. Hunt will, at worst, be sidelined into a cushy number and the "old boys' club" remains intact. When will the British people realise that this bunch of scoundrels are not above the law and are as accountable as the rest of us?

Of course they are above the law,it is only seldom the public find out.

The old code of an MP misbehaving and honouringly falling on their sword has well gone.
We need a legal code of behaviour for all MPs that can expel them.
Every PM I can remember has been involved in trying to bury unacceptable behaviour of colleagues under mountains of enquiries, public or otherwise or a reluctance to end the career of a pal.
Lord Archer, a convicted criminal remains a 'Lord' because there isn't a proccess to get rid of him. That is scanderless in a modern democracy and smacks of our ancesteral priviledged past.

Apparently Jeremy Hunt had a tendency to carry out discussions through text messages, which are not open to public scrutiny nor covered by the Freedom of Information Act.

Secondly, lobbyists for the coalition of media companies who were campaigning against the BSkyB takeover were banned by Hunt's officials from attending the only meeting arranged between the culture secretary and the deal's critics while Smith was secretly in contact with News Corp lobbyist Frédéric Michel.

Hunt briefed James Murdoch and Rebakah Brooks and represented their views at all times.
Jeremy Hunt visited News Corp in US as Murdochs considered BSkyB bid

James Murdoch told David Cameron News Corp would support Tories soon after Hunt's US trip in 2009, documents reveal

Hunt is a creep and a liar.

Hunt in 2010 :

" Rather than worry about Rupert Murdoch owning another TV channel......We would be the poorer and wouldn't be saying that British TV is the envy of the world if it hadn't been for him being prepared to take that commercial risk. We need to encourage that kind of investment ".

Tories did deal with Murdoch over BBC licence fee The Conservative party abandoned plans to share money from the BBC's licence fee with other broadcasters. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8657058/Tories-did-deal-with-Murdoch-over-BBC-licence-fee.html

Hunt says he will hand over e-mails sent between his advisor and the Murdoch empire. What about mail between himself and his boss, Calamity Cameron? There must be a reason Dave is keeping him in post as a buffer. Lesser of two evils?

Funny how Cameron was quick to act and strip Vince Cable of his role in the takeover of Sky.

Indeed, Cameron was quick to help out if Boss Murdoch, back then.

When will our politicians start putting policies

He is guilty as charged , if he wasnt , the evidence would have been provided by now and they would not be hiding behind the Leveson Enquiry

This poll..."will Jeremy Hunt keep his job?" is a completely different matter to whether he SHOULD! And we all know the answers to both!

Ono of those joke polls.

"If later on, obviously, it looks as if there's something that needs to be investigated under the ministerial code that can be done," he said.

Which in Laymans terms means once we have destroyed the evidence then we can proceed.

Cameron we don't give a toss about Hunt -- we the voters want you to get this country on it's feet, get rid of the Human rights act and get us OUT of the EUssr. When it was the EEC it worked well since this money wasting EU was created everything has gone to pot. Wake up Cameron and do something constructive.

It is noticeable that every time an issue that embarrasses the Conservatives and Cameron comes up, posters come on here to try to link or twist the issue with something that previous Labour Governments had done.
On this latest topic, there is no support coming from the supporters of Cameron. This is so embarrassing for the Conservatives that they cannot even come up with a single “yeah, but when Labour were in power they...............”
Hunt gave the worst performance ever by a minister when he spoke to Parliament and the Conservatives know it.
Come on you blue supporters and sycophants, let’s be hearing from you, or are you ashamed?
