A woman driver has died after a crash at Goodwood motor racing circuit, police said.

Sandra Harrison-Moore, 37, was driving a Caterham type sports car when she apparently lost control coming out of the last bend during a time trial event and collided with a tyre wall yesterday afternoon.

The driver, from Blackthorn Grove, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries but died at 10.10pm last night.

Police were called to the circuit and have been investigating the crash on behalf of HM Coroner for West Sussex but there is no evidence of any other vehicle being involved, a Sussex police spokesman said.

An inquest will be opened in due course.

Inspector Phil Nicholas said: "This appears to have been a tragic crash during a regular time trial event and our thoughts go to the victim's family, who were with her when she died."

The time trial event was being held under the auspices of the Motor Sports Association.

Saw that to but others have her at 37 and yet more have her at 27. Whatever her real age it was a tragic accident.

Condolences to all family and friends.

'sprinting' is one of the safer forms of motorsport and the safety standards are considered adequate but aren't as high as for full racing. without knowing any details at all of the accident, i'd speculate that the damage was done by having a crash hemet with no HANS device. with the driver harnessed in tight the weight of the helmet coupled with inertia can do serious damage to the neck.
so sorry for her family.

Sorry Tony - I don't think your speculation is accurate . The unfortunate driver died from severe head injuries after the accident . Without being too graphic, the HANS device prevents basal skull fractures by stopping the cervical spine from being hyperextended - precisely what occurs when someone is hanged . This is what killed Dale Earnhart Sr. and guaranteed the adoption of the HANS device . He was one of the most vociferous opponents of its introduction - sadly ironic .

thanks doc, i read that too but put it down to journalistic lack of understanding. since i do these kinds of competition too i'd like to know exactly what happened with the intent of avoiding the same problem. seems unlikely to be severe head injuries when wearing a lid and being tightly strapped in - unless it turned over of course - and even then?
i come at the problem from another angle too. BMW created their C1 scooter to be driven without helmet but with full safety harness. the government insisted that a helmet had to be worn and BMW showed that this was dangerous because of the potential neck damage in a spill.
