The rich got richer over the last year, with the wealthiest 1,000 people in the UK now worth a record £414 billion.

Bucking the double-dip recession and record unemployment, the super-rich have so far enjoyed a great 2012, with the combined wealth of the richest 1,000 now standing at £414.26 billion.

The figure represents a 4.7% rise on last year and surpasses the previous high of £412.85 billion in 2008, set months before the financial crash from which the rest of Britain has yet to fully recover.

There are 77 billionaires in the 2012 rich list this year, two more than the previous record of 75 in 2008 and the threshold to even be among the 1,000 richest people in Britain rose by £2 million on last year - with individuals needing at least £72 million to make the list.

The figures were released in the annual Rich List from The Sunday Times.

Although still holding on to the top spot, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, 61, has seen 27% wiped off the value of his family fortune in the last year as a result of the dramatic drop in the share value of his principal business, the giant steel producer ArcelorMittal.

The Mittals have now been number one in the rich list continuously since 2005.

British-born billionaires, including diamond retailer Laurence Graff, Sir Richard Branson, head of the Virgin empire, bag-less vacuum cleaner inventor Sir James Dyson and JCB owner Sir Anthony Bamford, have enjoyed sharp rises in their fortunes.

The richest woman is Staffordshire-born former Miss UK Kirsty Bertarelli, who shares a £7.4 billion fortune with her husband Ernesto.

Stakes in social media websites, including Facebook, Linkedin and Badoo have boosted the wealth of a number of millionaires in the latest rich list.

Andrey Andreev, 38, the London-based Russian businessman who founded the online dating site Badoo, is a new entrant in the list worth £500 million. Joanna Shields, the European vice-president of Facebook, is expected to add to her wealth when the business floats.

Mr Mittal and his family were worth £4.8 billion less than last year with £12.7 billion, leaving them just ahead of Uzbek metals magnate and Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov on £12.3 billion.

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich came in third with £9.5 billion, down £800 million on last year.

The wealthiest Briton is the Duke of Westminster, in seventh place with an estimated £7.35 billion thanks to his central London property empire.

Top of the list of the wealthiest people under 30 is Thomas Persson, 25, whose family clothing chain H&M means he and his brother Karl-Johan are valued at £700 million, while Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is in eighth place with a personal fortune of £54 million. Singer Adele is worth £20 million, making her the wealthiest young musician.

The top 10 billionaires are:

1 - Lakshmi Mittal and family - £12.7bn.
2 - Alisher Usmanov - £12.3bn.
3 - Roman Abramovich - £9.5bn.
4 - Sri and Gopi Hinduja - £8.6bn.
5 - Leonard Blavatnik - £7.58bn.
6 - Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli - £7.4bn.
7 - The Duke of Westminster - £7.35bn.
8 - David and Simon Reuben - £7.08bn.
9 - John Fredriksen and family - £6.6bn.
10 - Galen and George Weston and family - £5.9bn.

Dear Lakshmi,
I am in need of money so I can pay my student loans and accommodation fees for the past and next few years. Is it possible that I could exchange a few thousand (maybe a few million) quid from your account? I can't really pay you back in money but if it means a few nights in bed I can make that sacrifice

Lakshi Mittal, a good old fasioned British name

If they are non domicile in the UK and therefore don't pay full UK tax liabilities - they should be excluded from the list - let's have some real brits up there!!

From what I can see that means:-

1 Duke of Westminster
2 Galen and George Weston and family

Well done to them (not sure if the Westons are Brits - I hope so otherwise only 1 of the top 10 are)

alfcooper 1 - The Westons are Canadians - there are no Brits in the top 10 and of the next 10 the Brits ( Branson and Bamford ) own their companies abroad - Switzerland, Holland and Jersey - only the Duke of Westminster is UK born and UK resident for tax purposes - so out of £80 bilion owned by the fiist 10 - only his £7 billion is UK based

Damn!! - I was hoping for at least 2.

So you would immediately move away from the UK for 9 months of the year - and still call yourself British? - I'm dissapointed - not that you would care in your tax haven Eh?

no I wouldnt move from uk just get a good ??lawyer who could work the oracle for me like loads of MPS do

alfcooper - simply live in the Isle of Man or Channel Islands - they are still British but taxes negligible - We have a large number of clients who have moved there - nice places, nice locals , negligible crime, good services , excellent schools - what more could you want .
And you can legally visit the mainland effectively for 180 days a year - and in practical reality there is no control of your movements .

Any chance of some investivative reporting and letting us all know how much (or little) tax they paid this year?
11:42 PM on 04/29/2012
alfcooper - well their tax affairs are confidential , only HMRC know - but of the top 20 the answer is very little as they are either " non domiciles " like Mr Mittal , the Russians , Swedes etc or hold their assets abroad like Richard Branson ( Jersey and Switzerland ) or the Bamfords ( Holland and Switzerland ) .

I would suspect that the Duke of Westminster pays more tax than the first 20 richest put together as he is a UK resident for tax purposes

Ronnieince - so sad isn't it?
10:44 PM on 04/29/2012
For these greedy people its never enough they just want more does not matter how other people suffer as long as they get richer its a disgrace but you wont change them.

Yes it could - and it was a Labour government that stopped. Blair has a lot to answer for.

When 1,000 people are worth 414 billion and this Country is in a terrible state because it owes something like 170 billion ( probably more now) then it does beg the question.....Is this right?
I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to accrew wealth, but when this proportion is held by so few, and people are struggling to heat homes and put food on the table perhaps a little "adjustment" and re distribution needs to take place !!

PART 3 LAST ONE...
Recently, Mittal had emerged as a leading contender to buy and sell Barclays Premiership clubs Wigan and Everton. However on 20 December 2007 it was announced that the Mittal family had purchased a 20 per cent shareholding in Queens Park Rangers football club joining Flavio Briatore and Mittal's friend Bernie Ecclestone.[26] As part of the investment Mittal's son-in-law, Amit Bhatia, took a place on the board of directors. The combined investment in the struggling club sparked suggestions that Mittal might be looking to join the growing ranks of wealthy individuals investing heavily in English football and emulating other similar benefactors such as Roman Abramovich.[27]
On 19 February 2010, Flavio Briatore resigned as QPR chairman, and sold further shares in the club to Ecclestone, making Ecclestone the single largest shareholder.[28]
[edit]Environmental damage
Mittal purchased the Irish Steel plant based in Cork from the government for a nominal fee of £1 m. Three years later in 2001, it was closed, leaving 400 people redundant. Subsequent environmental issues at the site have been a cause for criticism. The Government tried to sue in the High Court to have him pay for the clean-up of Cork Harbour but failed. The clean up was expected to cost €70m.[29]
9 Kensington Palace Gardens--which was purchased from Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone in 2004 for £57 million (US$128 million)

If you really think anyone's going to read all that, you're mad!

Why not write your own post instead of cutting and pasting - or just give us the link to the Wikipedia article?

I read it. It's worth reading up on these kind of people. They are the scum of the Earth, making multi-millions from other people's hard work and lives. Why do people blindly carry on, ignoring what's really going on in the world, who really holds all the power and who pulls the strings. I for one wont be a pawn in their game and I encourage you to do the same.
