David Cameron Summoned To Commons Over Jeremy Hunt BSkyB Row

Posted: 30/04/2012 12:54 Updated: 30/04/2012 15:16

David Cameron will be forced to appear before MPs to explain why he has not referred culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to his independent adviser on ministerial interests.

John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, granted Labour's request for the prime minister to answer questions in the Commons over Hunt's contacts with News Corporation while he was supposed to be an independent adjudicator of its bid to take over BSkyB.

Cameron was forced to cancel a trip to Milton Keynes in the run up to this week's elections in order to face Ed Miliband.

The culture secretary has been accused of acting as a "cheerleader" for News Corporation's BSkyB takeover bid after the Leveson Inquiry published a raft of email exchanges between the company's chief lobbyist and Hunt's office.

Lord Justice Leveson has rebuffed Hunt's request to appear early so the issue will not be tackled in the inquiry until at least mid-May.

It is also thought Leveson will not rule on whether Hunt has broken the ministerial code in his dealings with Rupert Murdoch's company, adding pressure to Cameron to launch an official independent inquiry.

Labour have now insisted Cameron appears in parliament to personally explain why he is "trying to hide behind the Leveson inquiry".

"With parliament breaking up on Tuesday, Cameron must come to the Commons and explain to the British people why he is ducking his responsibilities to enforce the ministerial code," the party said.

But Cameron insisted he did not duck his responsibilities for "one second".

"I think we need to be absolutely clear that the ministerial code is for me, the behaviour of ministers is for me," he said.

"If ministers have behaved badly, broken the ministerial code, it is my responsibility either to ask Alex Allan's advice about what should happen or to take action myself and say they can't remain in the government."

On Sunday the prime minister said Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith had been right to resign over his contacts with News Corporation lobbyist Frederic Michel, which were "too close, too frequent".

But he added: "I don't think it would be right in every circumstance if a special adviser gets something wrong to automatically sack the minister."

Labour accused Hunt of having misled parliament when he told the Commons last year he was releasing "all the documents relating to all the meetings, all the consultation documents, all the submissions we received, all the exchanges between my department and News Corporation".

Last week a raft of emails between Rupert Murdoch's company and Hunt's office came to light for the first time - exposing the culture secretary to damaging allegations that he supported News Corporation's bid when he was supposed to be impartial.

Labour's deputy leader and shadow culture secretary Harriet Harman said it was "already evident that Jeremy Hunt has breached the ministerial code".

"Not only has he breached the ministerial code in many, many ways, but even more seriously than that when he was responsible for acting quasi-judicially on a hugely important takeover bid of £8 billion he did not act impartially.

"I just think it says everything about David Cameron that he is refusing to refer him to Sir Alex Allan, to investigate all these breaches of the ministerial code."

If Adam Smith was " Special Advisor " to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Adam Smith has resigned for being " Too Close " to " Rupert Murdoch's company " does that not mean that Adam Smith's " Special Advise " to Jeremy Hunt would have been in the Murdochs favour ??.. If not what was the point of having a " Special Advisor " ???? Very dodgy, why do people find it shocking to discover that the Government is sleazy and dishonest ?.. They promise the world just to get power then only look after themselves.

If Cameron faces this as stonily as he has other matters, then one can but think he and his crew are immovable.

The question, should he cast' Cedric' adrift, being ignored in favour of, 'Cedric' Hunt is my friend and ally, and I'll stick to him through thick and thin, will show just how thick skinned, as well as thick, Dave is.
If Bercow is adamant regarding his ruling, then one can but wonder how far this will, and can be, taken.

A visit to Her Maj maybe?

Maybe no custard on your pud tonight Mr Speaker, if invited to no. 10, that is.

these polititions get away murder, the trouble is everything is said behind closed doors, they can deny it and there is no way of proving it, but it still remains that why give information to one and not the other.

Cameron frequently gives the impression of treating Parliament as a (well-off) schoolboy from days of yore might have treated the lead soldiers in his toy army. When will he wake up to the fact that his comments and decisions (and indecisions) affect the lives of millions of real people?

It seems that we never accept responsibility for what we have done, the sleezy politicians, duck house buyers and those who rip everything off for themselves did not elect themselves we elected them!

If we elect the rich boys and former members of the Bullingdon club we cannot then complain that they are out of touch or just rich boys etc, WE ELECTED THEM!

Did you vote Conservative? Neither did I. What are you talking about?

I did not elect them because i did not vote. To cast a vote means you have faith in a party '.How can anyone have faith in the party,s we have at present??.

Cameron's DENIAL of a "grand Deal" and it's EXACT CONTENTS (that of course he says never happened) was bizarre to watch. WHY was he SO PRECISE in his denial of just EXACTLY did not occur? Because OBVIOUSLY, SOMETHING OTHER than what he just denied DID HAPPEN (in my opinion). He could have just thrown a blanket over the charges by giving a general denial that ANY "deal" occurred, but he didn;t. Cameron was EXACT as to what he DIDN'T do...hmmmmm, strange indeed.

Those of us who did not vote Con (very apt!) are still responsible for those cons that were elected. We failed to communicate to those who did vote con that they should not be voting for such people!

I fear that those living in the GLC area may re-elect a former member of the Bullingdon club this Thursday, I do not live in the GLC area so do not have a vote, but if this does happen I am still part of the collective we that allowed this to happen by not ensuring a better candidate people could vote for. We are all responsible for the government we get!

Sleaze, sleaze and MOREsleaze.
Seems like all politicians have snouts in troughs and hands in tills. Whatever party they are as soon as they get into power they are all on the make and out for themselves.
No wonder we are losing faith (and interest) in politics....none of them can be trusted.

Self serving grubby elitist politicians have no place in parliament.

Sack 'em.

Whether or not Jeremy Hunt has broken ministerial rules is NOT a matter for Leveson, but is a matter for Alex Allan, the Prime Minister and Parliament. One is left to think that Cameron's inability or unwillingness to see this clearly is a front to hise even more revelations about the cosy relationship between politicians and the media. There is a procedure and he should follow it!

If its OK for one then its OK for all.

There certainly are procedures in place but what I have found after 40 years of public service is that from a certain senior level upwards, those same procedures do not apply. Cameron is overly fond of moving goal posts to suit himself and by doing so abuses the system that he has been given to work within, as well as the majority of the people in this country.
