Police Force Gallery To Remove Leda And The Swan Image For 'Condoning Bestiality'

A Fool For Love by Derrick Santini: promoting bestiality?

An art gallery in London was forced to remove a photograph of a naked woman and a swan after a passing police officer said it ‘condoned bestiality’.

The image – a depiction of the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan – was hanging in the window of The Scream gallery in Mayfair where it had featured for a month without receiving any complaints.

But a particularly sensitive member of the Met was left spitting feathers after he spotted Derrick Santini’s photograph from a bus window, and promptly ordered the gallery to take it down.

The gallery's sales director Jag Mehta told the Telegraph: “It’s crazy. Perhaps the cultural references were lost on them.”

“They stood there and didn’t leave until we took the piece down.”

Santini himself, at least, is refusing to take the matter too seriously

"I guess it's basically funny - the police reaction and shows a distinct lack of culture in the force" he told HuffPost.

Leda and the Swan in a more classical form, by sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati

The Greek myth, in which god Zeus assumes the form of a swan in order to seduce or rape Leda, has inspired many artists throughout history, and was particularly popular during the Italian Renaissance.

Leonardo da Vinci made at least two attempts to interpret the story, making plans for a 1504 painting that never materialised and, four years later, painting a different composition of the scene altogether that was later lost.

Also lost is Michelangelo’s painting of Leda and the Swan that was commissioned in 1529 - a version that went on to inspire many famous engravings and sculptures.

Santini, a photographer from North Yorkshire, used a real life model and swan to create a modern take on the myth, and then went a step further by turning it into a lenticular image that moves when you walk past it...

At least one policemen seems to wish his version would get lost, too.

What do you think?

It's not bestiality. A swan is a fowl not a beast.

If that woman and swan are excusable for being nude and so close to each other, then what about family relatives, friends, or other people in non-sexual relationships?

I have to agree with the cop. That picture or video of the naked woman and swan is kind of appropriate. Sorry...

it appears to be a lewd act with a swan .. no different to a lewd act with a dog or a monkey, where do you draw the line? perhaps it depends upon how much money is involved.

Churches must now remove all images that depict the crucifixion, since these overtly promote brutality. Of course, if they were to discreetly shroud such images, they might be permitted to remain.
This would only apply to public places and situations where the objects might be viewed by persons passing by. Adults should still be allowed to entertain themselves privately however they like.

Uh…people are bothered by a swan flapping its wings while it is on top of a naked woman? You realize that even if the model was being paid she isn’t a prostitute because (and I’ll stake my sanity on this) she wasn’t actually having sex with the swan. I know there is a myth to that effect, and the policeman should be aware of that story as well, but in practical terms we are looking at a staged event.
Harry Potty isn’t really a boy wizard. He never actually killed a living Basilisk, even if you saw this happen on a screen in front of you a few years ago. It was all just acting, all just art.

You’re bothered by a lenticular image but a public servant walking into a business and taking work off their walls without going through any sort of ‘due process’ doesn’t disturb you in the least? I don’t know what your legal system is like but I can’t really point fingers because I’m sure the same sort of thing has happened on many occasions here in America. I find that bit of jackbooted authority more disturbing than depictions of sex, but hey, if it is pressing down on the throat of someone you don’t like (or an idea you don’t care for) it is that much easier to look the other way.
