Wet Weather Flood Hampshire

A man and his dog were both killed on Monday after a car became completely submerged in "5ft of fast-flowing water" as he tried to drive across a ford.

Officers were called to Thornford Road, Compton Wood, Hampshire, after they received reports of the stuck vehicle.

A woman was able to escape from the car but the man had to be recovered from it and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "A man has died after the car he was travelling in was submerged in water near Newbury.

"Police were called at 9.12am this morning to reports that a vehicle was stuck in a ford at Thornford Road, near Compton Wood.

"A woman was able to get out of the vehicle but a man was recovered from it. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The woman was taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital where she is being treated for shock."

Police later confirmed that the couple from the Middlesex area were husband and wife although they have not yet been named.

Britain Braced For Further Flooding

Emergency services attended the scene to recover the car, which had become "completely submerged" in the water.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said fire crews from Hampshire and Berkshire attended the scene after being alerted at 9.07am.

"Newbury firefighters, who had been joined by a crew from Kingsclere, then mounted a rescue operation using ladders from both sides of the banks of the ford to reach the vehicle.

"They broke the window of the vehicle and pulled a man free."

Station manager Mark White said: "On reaching the scene, fire crews made a dynamic assessment and quickly mounted a rescue operation to free the man from the vehicle.

"Once the man had been pulled free from the vehicle, crews from South Central Ambulance who were standing by carried out CPR."

A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said the conditions on the road, including the impact of recent rainfall on water levels at the ford, would form part of the force's investigation into the death.

Gusts of up to 71mph an hour battered South West England and Wales on Sunday leaving trees uprooted, power lines down and much of the country waterlogged.

The Met Office has issued a “code yellow” severe weather warning, urging members of the public to be aware of conditions which have “the potential to cause danger to life or widespread disruption”.

Very tragic, but having owned a business for 30 yeras in the lowest point in Kent and often under water, i have seen the magnetism that deep water holds for too many motorists, ie you drive into it.

Another tragic story. My condolences to the family

This ford has a sign which reads "Not suitable for vehicles". Even in mis summer it is extremely difficult to cross.

What on earth was the man doing driving through it?

I don't mean to cynical but one for the Darwin Awards I think.

When bangladesh/pakistan flooded we donated millions of pounds for their aid. Have they ever put there grubby little hands in their pocket to aid Britain in times of flood. Yes I suppose it was a silly question.

Bangladesh GDP per capita:$1,693
Pakistan GDP per capita: $2,787
UK GDP per capita: $36,090

All figures PPP 2011, per IMF

Does that answer your question?

17% of Pakistan was underwater, a bit of rain hardly compares

Ever since satelite navigators came a fashion item this has been happening at this ford, it is a very narrow road that cuts a very small corner, rather than continuing on the A339 and turning right at the roundabout. The ford road should be blocked or gated for use only by local farmers. There is at least half a dozen a year becoming stuck due to stupidness and not looking at the water depth boards before entering. Considering it has been raining for the last two weeks the ford would be very deep. People have no common sense and don't heed road signs and weather conditions. No sympathy.
If you need a satelite navigator you should not be on the road.
06:21 PM on 04/30/2012
ask a farmer who is to blame for this carry on and they will tell you DEFRA they stop farmers digging dykes and cutting down headges and cleaning out dykes ,with there stupid rule on wild life, farmers cannot just do the work as they like because of this stupid lot also lisern to the old guys who worked for the water boards and they will tell the truth about why this is happening ,ok some places will flood but it is lack of work force to carry out the work needed to help rivers to run

Your right, DEFRA remove many things that endanger rural communities and no one from DEFRA has to answer for it.

why on earth try to go through water that depth, I drive a jeep but I certainly would not attempt it, seen too many die trying, very sad for all involved ,all due to a bad decision .
07:34 PM on 04/30/2012
Not so much the depth, but the river's rate of flow.

At the end of the day, sad as it is its a shortage of common sense, no other answer.
05:06 PM on 04/30/2012
We do not know many details here. But why,I wonder, did the man try to get through the water with precious cargo on board i.e a woman, himself & a dog. Surely he must have seen the fast running water & common sense would have indicated the depth?

Hmm, misjudged the situation and probably had a car that he thought would be able to get through it alright? Perhaps it was not easy to judge the depth of the water and it all looked ok...
06:09 PM on 04/30/2012
I live near this ford - it is clearly marked on each side of the ford indicating the depth - the only time you wouldn't see the markers on the approach is when the water level is too high - in which case it also floods the approach by a considerable distance. My condolancies to his family for their loss

well done to the firemen for attempting the rescue. but - they attempted this at fast flowing water, and a different team would not go down a hole a couple of years ago to save a fallen woman who subsequently died due to the delay - why are some able to assess the risk and go for it but others are not allowed?
04:56 PM on 04/30/2012
GOOD POINT!!!!
05:21 PM on 04/30/2012
Different situation, different risks, different training and experience, different equipment available, different assessment of imminent danger to life... someone in a hole is likely to be stable for a while, someone in a submerged vehicle needs immediate assistance if at all possible.
04:24 PM on 04/30/2012
AAWWW. The poor dog. What a shame. He didn't even have a voice in making the decision.
06:02 PM on 04/30/2012
I so totally agree with you, my thoughts exactly. Also why didn't she pull the dog out with her. I don't think I could have left my dogs.

Today all the TV news bulletins have shown 2 land rovers surging through a flood.
Why? They are not helping anyone with their enormous damaging tidal wave, or going to a rescue. The camera is in front already.
Just off roaders having fun. Trouble is people with less experience think that they can do the same.
04:01 PM on 04/30/2012
This "post a comment" critical counter culture never ceases to amaze me with its judgemental one-up-manship. A man has died in tragic circumstances and some observers here have nothing better to say than "Well, I wouldn't have done that!". Well, good for you. Think of all the times you take a chance in life, thinking "that won't happen to me". This morning this poor guy probably thought the same and his luck ran out. Think of his wife - this morning she had a husband and now she's a widow - because of a terrible accident.

Not mentioned in the report, there was a woman with him who was able to save herself. For all we know, he could have kids or just was someone's kid. Sad in any case!

Thoughtful of Huffington to have included a photo of a car driving thru a puddle - this story would have been incomprehensible without it
