George Galloway has increased security in his London home after an intruder broke in and left a gay porn video and bottle of gin in the house.

Galloway, who was home at the time, attempted to confront the mystery trespasser with an old decorative sword he keeps under his bed, his spokesman said, but he failed to find the intruder.

The newly elected MP for Bradford West believes his London abode has been subject to frequent "visits" by a squatter or intruder over the last couple of years.

Suspicions were raised when objects seemed to be moved about in the day, while the newly elected Respect MP was away organising a humanitarian convoy to Gaza in 2010.

The Huffington Post UK was told that the house was effectively unoccupied in the day at that time for "several weeks".

However, reports that Galloway and his staff thought it was due to a poltergeist, as reported in the Daily Mail, were strongly denied by his spokesman on Tuesday.

"I told the Mail it was nothing to do with a poltergeist, it's absolute bollocks. The Mail just repeatedly prints lies. It's absolute rubbish", Ron McKay said.

McKay confirmed that the strange events culminated with the discovery of a gay pornographic video and a gin bottle left in Galloway's home.

"I was looking for my coat and opened the cupboard, and I discovered there was a gay video and gin" McKay said.

Galloway and his staff believe it is because a homeless man broke in while the MP was abroad. "We never found out who it was", McKay said, "but this was the suggestion by police... that homeless people had been breaking into a lot of properties in the area".

Detectives were able to find fingerprints and footprints on a downstairs window which the intruder had been using to get in and out.

Galloway himself had noticed something strange was happening when all his ties were moved out of his wardrobe. His staff had also lost personal objects - with McKay losing a watch.

"I have a sword, given to me in Saudi Arabia or somewhere," explained Galloway.

"So I unsheathed my sword and went upstairs [to the top floor]."

"There was no-one there, but there was a bottle of gin - which, of course, would never be in my house - and a gay video, which definitely would never be in my house."

"So the police came, and they said this person appears to have been living here in your house for some time."

He has now fitted the house with increased security measures and warned: "No-one can do it now because I've got CCTV and alarms and so on."

Galloway has spoken of how he was brought up to "hate alcohol" after his father would point out of the window of the family home in Dundee to highlight "neighbours swaying their way home."

"I have never tasted alcohol. Never in my life. An ideological choice," added Galloway.

Last week, an article in the New Statesman claimed Galloway had 'converted' to become a Muslim more than ten years ago.

Galloway later vehemently denied he had taken part in any such ceremony which was said to have taken place in Kilburn, North West London.
