Skywatchers take note: The biggest full moon of the year is due to arrive this weekend.

The moon will officially become full Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT. And because this month's full moon coincides with the moon's perigee -- its closest approach to Earth -- it will also be the year's biggest.

Eh? How is the Earth's gravitational pull on the Moon increasing? The only way that could happen would be if the Earth was growing heavier (or the Moon was, since the attraction is mutual, of course). Of course, they are both growing heavier through the accumulation of debris from space but I shouldn't worry too much about it at the moment. And of course there's more to it than we're being told - unless you want to wade through a textbook on orbital mechanics when you open this page.

It's not a supermoon at all, it is the same moon that has been around for years. It is just that much nearer to earth on this particular night. Odds on that there will be cloud cover that evening in the UK, but we get used to that disappointment.
