One man was killed and two others seriously injured in a motorway crash involving five vehicles, police said on Wednesday.

One man was killed and two others seriously injured in a motorway crash involving five vehicles, police said on Wednesday.

Two lorries, two vans and a car were involved in the incident between junctions 8 and 9 of the M5 near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, last night.

Gloucestershire Police said the accident happened on the northbound carriageway at around 9.10pm.

A passenger in one of the vans, a 22-year-old man from Batley in West Yorkshire, was taken to Worcester Royal Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the same van, a 27-year-old from Mirfield, West Yorkshire, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with serious injuries.

A 46-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, who was driving one of the lorries, was also taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he is being treated for serious, potentially life-changing, injuries.

A police spokeswoman said: "Witnesses to the collision that haven't yet spoken to police are asked to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary on telephone number 101, quoting incident number 444 of May 1.

"The motorway was closed until around 6.30am today to allow for a full investigation to take place."
