Madeleine McCann Anniversary: Taxi Driver Claims He Picked Up Maddy Night After She Disappeared

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 02/05/2012 13:49 Updated: 02/05/2012 14:06

A taxi driver who believes he picked up Madeleine McCann the night after she vanished has claimed that Portuguese police ignored his report.

Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman said it was "deeply shocking" that detectives never interviewed Antonio Castela about his possible sighting of the missing child.

Castela, 72, went to the Policia Judiciaria (PJ), Portugal's CID, after three men, a woman and a young girl resembling Madeleine got into his cab on the evening of 4 May 2007 in Monte Gordo in the Algarve.

This is about an hour's drive from Praia da Luz, where the British child had vanished from her family's holiday apartment the previous night.

The taxi driver drove the group two miles to the Hotel Apolo in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, where they drove away in a blue jeep.

Castela told the Evening Standard: "After I went to the police, I never heard anything from them again.

"They did not seem to take me seriously and never questioned me. They simply took down the details and that was it.

"I am amazed that it has been five years and nobody has ever asked me what I saw that night. I am absolutely certain it was her."

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Mr Castela did absolutely the right thing at the time by reporting his sighting to the PJ.

"It is clearly deeply shocking that he now tells us he has not been interviewed once by a detective in five years.

"This is exactly the sort of thing that needs to be looked at in the investigative review now being carried out by the Metropolitan Police.

"Kate and Gerry remain very happy that the Met are performing their role as efficiently as they can."

Earlier, the McCanns spoke of their renewed hope that their daughter Madeleine will be found five years on from her disappearance.

I hope maddy is found. I really feel for the parents. They are innocent as regards her disappearance but are guilty of neglect. No matter what has happened I feel we should all stop getting at them and some are even suggesting they took her away. Lets concentrate on her return and pray she is still safe.

Here is another suggestion for the McCanns if they are reading all the comments on here, why don't you both go and prove your innocence to the public and take a lie detector test, maybe you both could go on the Jeremy Kyle show and get one done free ...I'm sure you both would be waiting nervously for the tests results to come back wouldn't you...

I cannot believe some of the ridiculous comments posted here; of course, no one is perfect and there is no such thing as a perfect parent. But we are talking here about RESPONSIBLE parenting, and while there is never a guarantee that one's children will always be 100% safe, there are things that responsible parents do to lessen the odds that anything horrible like this will happen. Why are people feeling so sorry for the parents here, when they put their children's lives at serious risk? They had other options....they could have 1) taken the children with them to the tapas restaurant/bar, 2) stayed at home with them, or 3) ensured the children were left with a babysitter or adult. You just do not leave young children at that age alone in a house, esp on a vacation resort place when these places are already targets for robbery as people think rich tourists stay there.

The parents are decidedly NOT the victims here...the child is the vicitm, and if the parents need to live with the consequences of this for the rest of their life, then so be it...they were grossly negligent and put their kids at serious risk by leaving them alone. All this stuff about the police and the resort's security is a moot point, they would not have been involved if the parents were responsible people.

Nothing is foolproof or 100% safe, nothing at all. How many stories have we heard of people that you would think would be responsible, have looked after children and its ended in tragedy. How many stories of close family members killing children? How many stories of the actual parents taking the lives of their children? What would have made it more safe for them to have taken up the baysitting service? Exactly the same thing could have happened, and the same witch-hunt would be taking place for Maddie's mother. Theres no doubt that it wasnt the best decision, but dont you think that the decision haunts her every minute of her life? Dont you think she aches to see her baby again? Dont you think she prays every single night that she could turn the clock back and wake up from the nightmare she has to live right now? Because I do.

WRONG! We all need to keep our eyes open for Maddy. EVERY time you go out, KEEP LOOKING! Every time your on holiday abroad, KEEP LOOKING!

The unimaginable is....It could be YOUR DAUGHTER!

It is five years now. Can you even start to understand the total joy for her parents if Maddy is found save? I pray to God she is!

Oh yes we will keep our eyes open for her. You sound like those that still beleive Elvis is alive. Nonsense
01:36 PM on 05/09/2012
I'm sure she is alive. But certainly do not believe she is in Portugal. Within hours of her being taken she could of been in any European country, Nobody bothers checking passports anymore within Europe. Passports and forged documents are easily available. So gaining a passport for her at a later point would of been easy, Forget the mark on Maddies eye, That's easy to hide. (CONTACT LENSES) Kids are gullible at that age, so she could be wearing one to cover up that mark on her eye, thinking that by not wearing one could have drastic affects on her sight. You say look out for her when going abroad on holiday. Why not look in this Country. My gut feeling is she is alive and well. And not living overseas but is back in the UK, living a happy life. When she was taken she could obviously speak so a English speaking girl with say a foreign family would not fit into most communities. I would say that she is with a English family, living here in the UK. Probably in a travelling community. I doubt she goes to school, whilst kids are gullible, they are not stupid. One mention of her name in a school and she would no doubt say that was my old name. Cont >

If they were trying to abduct a little girl, why on earth would anyone involve a taxi as part of their getaway? There would always be a possibility that the driver could describe the girl and her captors, where they went, the car they then got into (apparently), and unless they were very careful, would leave their DNA all over the place in the cab and on the money they paid the fare with.

Such a lot of ill-informed unintelligent comments, together with the odd glint of common sense. Everyone becomes the moral arbitrator of this sad situation.
I just have a deep unease on this matter, and always have done.

as a father of daughters and a proud grandad of two lovely lttle girls, i wish with my whole being that Madeleine could be found alive a well as she could be, and this torture of her parents could end.

Yes they made a stupid mistake but those that have not throw the first stone. Come onScotland Yard do it?

as good parents you would never ever leave 3 yound children in a room while you went out with friends, doesnt matter how long that is, what really pisses me off because they are high profile they have managed to get the british detectives spending thousands of their budget what about all the other kids that have gone missing, proberly from lower class families that are unable to articulate and not professional like the mcCanns. the whole case is very suspicious in my veiw, none of it adds up, I think the mcCanns know what happened.! They certainly should of been punnished for neglect!
06:32 AM on 05/03/2012
How many times do the McCann's have to apologise for their mistake in leaving their precious daughter that night?? I agree that if they were not professionals then maybe this case would not continue to be in the headlines BUT THANK GOD THEY ARE, because they are able to keep it fresh in everyone's mind. I cannot believe that anyone could say that Gerry and Kate are not united, nor can I believe that people are still banging on about the fact that they should have been done for neglect. I so respect their faith, strength and determination to continue the fight to find their daughter whilst trying to give their other two children a fairly normal, loving upbringing. My heart went out to them 5 years ago and still does today.

Sorry harjen, but I agree with Tina Attwood. I have just listened to the McCanns, again on TV and not once have they said " but if only we had not left our babies) but they don't it is everybody else who is not doing there job. if only they had ,they would have that little girl with them. saying that I do feel for them. very sad and hope with all my heart she is found.and that she can forgive her parents for leaving and her siblings to have fun.
07:36 AM on 05/03/2012
The pain they are going through has been brought about by themselves, its Maddie who is the victim, I do not know a parent who would of left their babies and small child alone whilst they were with friends, when you have children you have to put their safety . first always! I hope she is found alive, and that she would be able to forgive her parents for their total neglect, if she is not alive then the parents are to blame, and they will pay for their neglect.Their neglect was not a fleeting mistake but a very concious decision about leaving them alone, the apartments could of been on fire and they would of lost all three children.
07:53 AM on 05/03/2012
I agree, they made a stupid and downright neglectful mistake in leaving their children, when not only could they affford a babysitter, but the resort had a free babysitting service, we could harp on forever at how they should legally be punished...

but as a parent myself i believe they paid the ultimate price for their mistake... to spend every day since wondering where your child is, if they are even alive or dead, and not knowing what horrors they may have seen or heaven forbid been put through... no court imposed punishment could compare...

As for saying what would happen if it were a less successful couple.. well look at some of the other people who have gone through similar ordeals.. lets not forget the search for shannon which was surrounded in a media frenzy and the public formed a help fund just as they did in the case of maddie.. ok it was an elaborate plot by a demented parent.. but the point still stands, they were low income, inarticulate people.. and received just as much help..

It isnt about the Mccanns being middle class, it is about the fact, media has progressed.. almost everyone has mobile phones, and internet, the news is 24 hours and on many channels.. newspapers can be read online not just in paper version... this all helps to publicise such cases.. and very rightly so.

When will people realise that his investigation was flawed from the beginning, by British police standards. The SIO (Senior Investigating Officer) might well have harboured suspicions about the McCanns, but he should not have allowed them to cloud his judgement to the extent that his team did not follow up leads or interview potential witnesses - these are hanging offences in the British CID. It should also be remembered that the SIO was under investigation for brutality to prisoners and that he was summarily removed from the McCann case. He has acted most unprofessionally since, even publishing a book which makes unsubstianted claims. The primary rule of criminal investigation is to keep an open mind, regardless of any suspicions you might have about anything.

I've read this and other of your comments, Chrs, and it's good to see some cerebral order applied to the story, instead of the chaotic spillings of woolly thinking from so many amateur sleuths. Keep it up, please do. A few might be moved to change the way they 'think' about the case - though don't refrain from breathing normally - advice I'm sure your experience has taught you to heed!

I agree, Chrsanders nails it.
The allegations of brutality towards prisoners involved a scarily similar case to Madelaine's, and close by as well. The mother looked like she'd been hit by a truck after she "confessed". The Mcann's had a very lucky escape there - if the British police hadn't taken their side...

so much has been said. private detectives have bled the family and donated money dry. a taxi driver did come forward and i agree this is old news. blood was found in the room. allegedly madeline was kate's child and not his. the twins were there's.

dogs picked up fresh sent in their rental car. how much of this is true i don't know but even if madeline is found i hope there is something left of her that is still madeline. i dread to think what could of happened. children left alone at hotels can be targeted or chosen for looks. but her eye was so distinctive surely someone would notice. but parents have never presented as a united front.

THE POLICE ADVICED THE MCCANNS NOT TO MAKE THE EYE THING PUBLIC AND EXPLAINED THEIR REASONS FOR THEIR ADVICE.. OFCOURSE THE MCCANNS IGNORED THIS ADVICE! WHERE IS THE PROOF MADDY HAD THAT MARK IN HER EYE? PICS CAN BE DOCTORED / ALTERED.
