Poll Reveals That People Regard 61-Year-Olds As ‘Middle Aged'

According to a recent poll, blowing out the candles on your 61st birthday doesn't signal the onset of retirement, but rather that you're happily into middle age.

The poll of 1,080 adults by The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion revealed that 63% of people believe that 61 isn’t old and regard those in their 60s as being middle-aged rather than elderly.

Only 22% of participants thought 61-year-olds were ‘old’ and 15% described them as ‘young’.

So where does that leave actual middle-aged people? Well, it’s even better news for them, as the poll revealed that people aged 45 and above are considered to be 'really young'.

Take a look at our round-up of celebrity women over 50 (who rock it).

Physically, I will 61 years old on November 18, 2012. How old I am mentally, emotionally, and spiritually is up for debate!

I can't understand the attitude here about age what is age it's how one feels looks and behaves that determines whether one is old or not!! I know people who behaved old when they were in their 20 ties and others in their 80 ties that are still working active and very young and look great, its all a nonsense, get with it and change your attitude nothing should stop you from who you want to be or what you want to feel or look like but you?

Quite right, it doesn't matter how old you are, you are stuck with the condition of your own body and it's irrelevant to you how anyone else feels. You can try to improve yourself, but all you can really say is that, generally, as time goes on, people stay healthier and live longer.

Some good news at last!

So now I'm only 42, so why is it still so hard to get out of bed in the morning and why can't I read small newsprint? (I left out a few other things)
12:02 on 03/05/2012
if the new 41 is 61 , that makes me 48, what aload of rubbish, haven't these people got better things to do than make cras statements like that, i can't, and i doubt anyone else at 68 can do what the did at the age of 48,

I'm sure many people in their early 60s can go along with that, but try telling employers. There is massive prejudice against anyone in that age group when it comes to work. Experience means jackshit to these people as they're more intersted in 'young, dynamic, blah, blah....'

As has been said many times, we are all 18 but some of us have been arround a bit long, some are still heading there !

This all depends on the ages of the people asked . Being in my sixties I have friends in their 70s that I don't consider old . No doubt in my twenties I would have thought they were ancient !

CRIKEY I'M AGEING BACKWARDS,I MIGHT MAKE IT TO THE GRAND OLD AGE OF TWENTY.BUT ON THE DOWN SIDE I'VE GOT TO KEEP WORKING TILL THEY PUT ME IN MY WOODEN BOX.

I noticed on Huff recently comments referring to the sixties as ''a generation ago''. It is two. Town I live in I see kids whose grandparents were born in the sixties.
