Ian has been missing since he fell into the River Wear last week

The mother of an eight-year-old boy who fell into a swollen river has vowed never to stop looking for him.

Ian Bell was playing with friends near his home in Sunnybrow, Willington, County Durham, last Friday evening when he was swept into the River Wear.

Ian has not been found, despite an extensive search by public volunteers, police, fire crews and the RAF.

Police have since reduced their search.

Ian's mother, Claire Bell, said: "We still have hope in our hearts that Ian will be found soon and just want to find him and bring him home.

"As Ian's mother I have always made sure he was aware of the dangers when playing nearby to the river.

"We are all devastated that we may never find Ian, but we will always have hope and will continue to search for him.

"Our friends and neighbours have been fantastic over the last few days and we would like to thank everyone involved in the search for their help - it means such a lot to the family during this extremely difficult time that we have the support of our tight-knit community."

Depending on the currents and tides, his body will be found soon. I'm so very, very sorry that a mother has a dead child, especially at that age. There is no horror more acute than having your child die...and not being able to find/retrieve the body.

My heart goes out to the parent. Nothing is mentioned about the father.

I do not know what has been written on the ones that have been removed, but I can have a good idea. Their so many people who have no feelings for others. Where ever this little lad is may the Lord bring peace and some closure to his grieving family and friends and may he have peace in Gods hands. It is good to see others feeling the same as me instead of me getting abuse, bless you all.

I feel so sorry for the family and equally feel deep sympathy for all families who lose their children.

My heart is absolutely breaking for this poor family. I can only imagine the pain and the torture of not knowing where he is and that the ultimate result when they do find him will be the saddest and most tragic.

My thoughts and prayers are for you all. @--}}---}}---------------

Tragedy strikes when we least expect it and I just can't contemplate the pain of losing a child.

So sorry for their loss

Poor little soul, playing innocently and then all of a sudden swept away......Would loke to feel positive on his safe return but as the days get colder and the rivers wider...... Poor mother, god knows what state she must be in,i have a child the same age..... I would of had a nervous breakdown. Love goes out to the Parents and family through this terrible nightmare of a journey.
