Detectives have arrested a former police officer in a dawn raid in Surrey as part of the investigation into inappropriate payments relating to the phone-hacking scandal.

The 57-year-old was arrested by officers from Operation Elveden, which runs in conjunction with Operation Weeting, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The 27th arrest in the investigation, Scotland Yard said the man had retired several years ago but had served in the MPS Specialists Operations command.

In a statement the Met Police said: "He is currently being questioned at a south west London police station and his home address is being searched.

"Today's arrest is the result of information provided to police by News Corporation's Management Standards Committee. It relates to suspected payments to a former police officer and is not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately."
