Aggressive Swan Nicknamed 'Mr. Asbo' Removed From The River Cam

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 04/05/2012 11:49 Updated: 04/05/2012 11:51

For the most part, swans' reputation is that of gracefulness - but if there's one thing that Mr. Asbo doesn't have, it's grace. In fact, replace 'grace' with 'the desire to attack people who go past him on the River Cam' and you're more along the right lines.

Finally removed from his particular stretch of the river after several complaints, the swan locals called 'Mr. Asbo' will no longer be attacking canoists who happen to float alongside him.

As for where he is now, all that's known is that he's over 60 miles away in a "secret location" - something that makes swan removals suddenly sound a lot more like a James Bond movie.

Many river users, including students from nearby Cambridge University, have welcomed the news now that their cuts, bruises and egos have healed - though a few dissenters are unhappy that a wild animal has been taken out of his preferred habitat.

That said, with it being nesting season, perhaps it was only going to get worse with Mr. Asbo - and maybe we'd end up with a swan-starring Jaws remake on our hands... and no-one wants that.

And just to remind you that not all feathered beasties are scary, here are some utterly adorable videos of some ducks being utterly adorable. Enjoy!

We had one kill a grounds keeper last week. The keeper was in a kayak and got too close to the nest. ~~(^..^)

Sixty miles is no great distance for a bird. I daresay it'll find its way back eventually, especially if it's emotionally attached to the place. I always preferred hand-feeding swans over ducks and geese. The swans were invariably gentle and 'mannerly' whilst the others would happily tear the linings out of my jacket pockets to see if there were any more bits of bread!

Nothing to stop him flying right back. Perhaps if he met a mate in his new habitat he would be more inclined to stay there.

I can only assume you've never seen swans attack people. They do. Nor seens swans attack and actually kill other smaller waterfowl. They do.

I have been 'attacked' by swans, Simon. My wife and I were strolling along a nature reserve river bank, but it was our own fault for getting too close to where they were nurturing their eggs. I've heard anecdotal evidence that they can easily break a man's arm too. I haven't seen them attack smaller fowl but am not surprised. Even hamsters, shrews and other small mammals can be aggressive when need arises. I alluded only to how they took food from me, compared with how other birds did, and in that activity they were gentle, despite the attack on us earlier: The bird chased us no more than a few yards - more a postured threat than an actiual attack, I suppose - for which kindness we were duly grateful:-)

Ok, how is that duck video funny at all? The physical equivalent of that to a human is filming one falling down about 5 flights of stairs, end over end.

Not cute! Seeing their tiny little bodies tossed across the tarmac is not what I'd call cute.

As for the story, the swan should stay where he is. He was there first! :)
