Local Elections 2012: Schoolgirl Becomes Labour Councillor

' I TRENDED ON TWITTER TONIGHT? So Awesome': Schoolgirl Becomes Labour Councillor

A schoolgirl has become one of the youngest councillors in the country after winning a seat on Plymouth City Council.

Kate Taylor, who was standing for Labour, won her Devonport seat with a majority of 839 as her party won control of the council last night from the Conservatives.

The 18-year-old, who is an A-level student at Notre Dame RC School in Plymouth, took to Twitter to speak of her delight at winning her council seat.

"It's been an exhausting campaign but it was all so worth it. Real work starts here - and I can't wait," she wrote.

"I can't even put into words how amazing it feels.

"Thank you so much for all your tweets tonight. I am incredibly happy and honoured to have been elected.

"But right now I need to get some sleep!!! Absolutely shattered, it's been an incredible but exhausting day."

After the teenager won, she 'trended' on Twitter - meaning she was one of the most popular topics on the social network site.

"Yea, when my result came in, my username was tweeted so many times it trended for all of a couple of minutes :p," she wrote.

"Wait hold up a second. One last thought. I TRENDED ON TWITTER TONIGHT? So awesome."
