Supermoon To Appear On 6 May In Europe And The UK

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 04/05/2012 16:26 Updated: 08/05/2012 08:18

Stargazers and lunatics alike have a treat in store for them this weekend, when a "supermoon" will appear in the skies on Sunday 6 May.

The full moon on 6 May is the closest and largest full moon of this year. Called a perigee full moon, it will be at the closest possible point to the Earth, making it appear much larger than usual.

The supermoon has a range of wild effects. It brings king tides and is believed to affect mental health.

A supermoon is also simply a delight to behold. The supermoon in May is 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons, according to Nasa, making 6 May a great time for a night walk.

While a 16% increase is very hard to measure, the moon will appear larger and brighter for the night of 6 May in the UK and 5 May in the US.

The perigee moon appears each month, but a magnificent supermoon last appeared on 19 March 2011, looming over London and glowing a deep, dark orange.

The full moon rises behind the statue of Mahathma Gandhi in Hyderabad on March 19, 2011. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Nearby perigee moons are about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit. According to US Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. I've been a night worker in casinos for the last 15 years, here in the UK and abroad. I was doing a Saturday night shift where every customer I had to deal with was either a complete loony or totally over-reacting to whatever the problem was. On a well-deserved break I stomped into the staff-room and demanded of the world in general "What the hell is going on out there tonight?" That's when I learned about the double full moon that weekend!

My advice? If the super-moon is going to affect people even half as much as that weekend, STAY INDOORS!!!!

My Neighbour had a Mynah Bird and she always had to make shure she covered it's cage at night, otherwise if there was a full moon it would launch into a loud sweary tirade at the moon all night. Unfortunatly mimicking her voice so the whole neighbourhood thought she was nuts and swearing at her son. She had to leave the bird uncovered one full moon and get her neighbours round to witness it in full expleitive loving voice before anybody would believe her.

ah, but where did it learn all that and the voice! Hmmm!

& yes . it.s a well known fact that violent crime etc happens more when theres a full moon . hence the name MOONSTRUCK !

There's no connection between the moon and human behaviour. There's something called "confirmation bias" where we select pieces of, so called, evidence and take them on board and ignore evidence to the contrary. In common language, we see what we want to see. ( i just read it on the internet and it was mentioned on QI. so it must be true. )
