Grooming Trial: Ramadhan Foundation Accuses Elders Of Ignoring Sexual Exploitation

PA/The Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 08/05/2012 16:34 Updated: 08/05/2012 16:56

The leader of the Ramadhan Foundation has accused Pakistani community elders of "burying their heads in the sand" on the issue of on-street grooming, following nine men being found guilty today of being part of a child sexual exploitation ring.

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the group, said police should not let the "issue of race" stop them from addressing the issue.

The Ramadhan Foundation is a Manchester-based Muslim organisation that works for "peaceful co-existence and dialogue for all communities".

  • Mr Shafiq said: "There is a significant problem for the British Pakistani community, there is an over-representation amongst recent convictions in the crime of on-street grooming, there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race as this is central to the actions of these criminals.

"They think that white teenage girls are worthless and can be abused without a second thought; it is this sort of behaviour that is bringing shame on our community.

"I urge the police and the councils not to be frightened to address this issue, there is a strong lesson that you cannot ignore race or be over sensitive."

He added: "I have been overwhelmed by the support the Ramadhan Foundation has been given by young people for our campaign on child grooming but concerned that community elders are once again burying their heads in the sand, this concerns us all and we must speak out.

"The community elders need to learn from the reaction of young people and reject any attempt to silence the reaction from our community.

"We have over the past 12 months seen tremendous progress, more Imams have spoken out in Friday sermons; workshops and activities for young people have happened in the community and there is a strong commitment to see this work through.

"We encourage local authorities and schools to learn from Rochdale where over 9,000 teenagers have attended a workshop on child grooming.

"The Ramadhan Foundation is ready to stand with anyone who wishes to protect these young teenagers."
He said the police would need to "reflect on their failures" in this case.

"Finally the far right and fascist movements are not welcome to Rochdale, we reject their division and hatred and it has no place in a tolerant and diverse society.

"We will learn lessons from this case but not allow outsiders to divide us," Mr Shafiq added.

Given the choice between attacking muslims and attacking criminals.... there will always be some who choose the muslims.

    • They are not happy in Lebanon.
    • They are not happy in Sudan.
    • They are not happy in Jordan.
    • They are not happy in Iran.
. They are not happy in Pakistan.
    Where are the Muslims happy?

    They are happy in France.
    They are happy in Italy.
They are happy in England, Germany.
    They are happy in Sweden.
    They are happy in Holland.
    They are happy in Denmark.

    They are happy in Norway.
They are happy in the U.S.
    They are happy in Canada.
    They are happy in Hungary.
    They are happy in Australia.
They are happy in New Zealand.
They are happy in any other country in the world that
aer not under a Muslim rule.
    And whom do they blame?
    • Not Islam.
    • Not their leadership.
    • Not themselves.
But the same countries in which they are happy to live.
This is so true.. Democracy is really good for them:
In a democracy they can live comfortably,
Enjoy the high quality of life ,which they did not build
    nor work for,
They don’t have to be productive and earn a living,

this is just the tip of the iceberg. We have very weak leadership in this country and the politicians change religion just to get votes. One reason the mayoral candidate lost his support for the recent election. His comments about making London a beacon of their faith did not go well with those of the other religions.

It is about time that the matter is addressed before we have a big disaster and matters are out of control. Why is it that these people are involved in bigamy, lack of respect for other faiths, lack of respect for other cultures.

Part of the issue is that these Muslim men, saw the girls that they so terribly abused as mere "kafir trash".. - check out the meaning of kafir!!
Another element is turning of 'blind eyes' by the community Elders/Chiefs to these despicable acts going on within the community they were supposed to be leading by example. The goings on must have been obvious to them surely??

To not brand it what it so obviously was a "Racist" or "Racially motivated" crime(s) will only play into the hands of the Far Right, which beneath or off of the radar is gathering support, despite being starved of publicity!!

It needs some strong decisive action in order to stop this whole thing 'going up' in our faces.
    08:52 PM on 05/09/2012
Community elders are like politicians. They are only interested in what wil benefit themselves. Money and social status. Why would they get involved in the welfare of young white girls.

This message is to all the people that make excuses for "immigrants" and their total ignorance of our customs and traditions.
I accept that one group of Pakistanis doing this does not mean that all pakistanis do it BUT all I ever hear are excuse for these people. They devalue any area that they take over, they are the biggest leeches of ALL nationalites. How can you continue supporting them?
    07:27 PM on 05/09/2012
Working in security/doors I saw several cases of grooming. My Asian colleagues laughed it off. Some abusers were arrested. It happens week in and week out. Where are the white males to stop and to protect these girls from climbing into Asian cars and vans...?
    09:01 PM on 05/09/2012
They're afraid of being arrested after being accused if being "racist"!! That's why no / few young white males will take a stand!!

If the same was done to their women they be howling all the way to Westminister, claiming ,racism, compensation& Christ knows how many riots we would have on our hands, carnt they see that this breeds rascism?
    05:51 PM on 05/09/2012
sick and tired of all the mouthing off being done about "racism". They have even been condemned by their own. TIME TO WAKE UP and realise this is going on and this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND ABHORRENT in our culture. ALL paedos should be treated equally in my opinion in terms of punishment. HANGING. Or life meaning life. BUT the political correctness surrounding this case is sickening. Yes it IS cultural in this case, they were seen as white and therefore worthless and open for abuse to be treated like objects to be passed round. Utterly abhorrent and sickening. And the political correctness is even sicker. STOP TRYING TO JUSTIFY THINGS by playing the race card. STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!
    09:14 PM on 05/09/2012
If - i say 'If' - the victims of this horrific abuse were "seen as white and therefore useless" by these perverts, then contrary to what's been 'fed' into the media, and by definition, it was a racist crime!! Imagine it in reverse... Imagine the PC brigade foaming at the mouth rhetoric in defence of their 'sacred cow multiculturalism'?? Get the picture I'm trying to paint??????
On yr wanting capital punishment, I'd be very, very wary because you can't correct 'cock ups' - miscarriages of justice - now can you??
Life imprisonment, including chemical castration might provide a better answer??
    05:36 PM on 05/09/2012
this isnot an isolated thing here its happening all over the country and has been for yrs the police social services have ignored this for yrs for fear of being called racists
shame on them and shame on the muslim communities for trying to silence there own people from helping the police when the finaly deciced to act
    09:15 PM on 05/09/2012
It would though seem that the Muslim community has 'friends' among Catholic clergy, sadly!!
    04:36 PM on 05/09/2012
Sadly some of our foreign friends do not uphold our ideals. They have their own, which conflict with ours, doubt if it will ever change.

When Italians in the mafia commit crimes, no-one demands that all Roman Catholics are to blame. If a gang of black youths get caught running a drugs ring no-one demands that the 'elders' in black communities do something about it. So why is that when a group of criminals from the South Asian communities are involved in organised criminal activity that there's a demand that 'community' do something about it?

Does anyone seriously believe these drug-dealing, booze-peddling perverts were regulars down their local Mosque? Of course they weren't. They obviously have no moral compass. So how exactly is it the fault of the South Asian community as a whole for not doing enough?

This rent-a-quote Mohammed Shafiq guy is after attention and government money, and he is rightly reviled by his own community. He claims to run something called the 'Ramadhan Foundation' which is basically him and his brother with a website and absolutely no influence in the Muslim community. He knows if he says stupid things like 'the elders don't do enough' - essentially pushing blame on to his own community for a crime committed by a small group of organised criminals - then he can get some media attention. I'm sure he will be angling for a large chunk of money from the government for his two-man 'Foundation".

Can someone tell me what the legal reasons are that a 59 year old man can't be named? Not that I know or would wish to know any of the defendants. I'm just curious that a man identified as the ringleader - and who isn't a minor - is protected in this way...?
    12:41 PM on 05/09/2012
I was thinking the same thing. What possible reason could there be not to name the 59 y/o? Yet all the others have had their street addresses even printed. Like you it's not something I care too much about, just curious as well.

The court is not protecting him. He's a convicted criminal. Most likely there is a different trial in which he is involved and there is a restriction on him being named to prevent the other trial being prejudiced. Once that trial is finished the restriction will be lifted.

I should say I don't know this to be true. It is just a likely scenario.
    02:37 PM on 05/09/2012
    Sounds reasonable, PF. Cheers.
    08:46 PM on 05/09/2012
Agreed. It could also be an immigration case and not wishing to prejudice that either.

Are we becoming so week as a nation that we can no longer see right from wrong? I am a great believer in fair play and even handedness when the law has to deal with people who commit crimes, but come on! these people have set out to target white girls, so they should be put in the nastiest nick possible where they will be taught a lesson. Why are we spending millions on people like the Mad Cleric, send him home and this lot with him and let Islamic justice take it's course!

We became weak years ago. No one gives a toss anymore. We close our front doors and ignore ALL the injustices in this country.Everyone is too scared to say or do anything all because of the race factor.
    08:51 PM on 05/09/2012
i agree with what you say! unfortunately i keep getting myself in situations because i will spaeak out! i play the race card at least once a day! because im a bog standard white british educated male in my forties! always worked! paid my way etc! work with more foreign nationals than i'm happy about, simply because i see a country, as you say! weak! i play the race card, just to get a reaction! and it works! not because i'm nasty! just because!
    09:27 PM on 05/09/2012
Well Ms BB I have to disagree with you in part. We, after all are debating, discussing the whole affair, so obviously we care about the situation enough to be on HP. My question is this. Are we prepared to actually come out from behind our screens and DO anything about it??
Injustice has been endemic in this country or centuries. Just think of how many rich people have gotten away with 'murder' because they could afford decent legal representation??
