Golden Retriever Meets Fawn, The World Is A Much Cuter Place (VIDEO)

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 09/05/2012 10:38 Updated: 09/05/2012 13:52

Meet Dickens the Golden Retriever and Bambi the fawn. We call her Bambi not because that's her actual name, but mostly because she looks so much like, you know, Bambi.

Reading the description beneath this particular video, Dickens' owners say that his motto is "I'd rather play than obey", and so it proves with the shiny-coasted so-and-so bounding over to a nearby baby deer and having a massive cute-off with her.

Seriously, it's enough to make you want to call up your nearest Hollywood producer and beg them to make a movie of it. Something along the lines of Homeward Bound, Milo And Otis or Animal Avengers Assemble... Ah, we can but dream.

Of course, it's not just dogs who are having adorable meet-ups with deer, as this cats vs. deer video gallery below proves beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Not cute, just a stupid woman who cannot see this fawn is utterly terrified.
Deer are prey species and that fawn has met its worst nightmare, to it her pet is a wolf looking for lunch.

What is wrong with you Americans ? It was quite clear the the fawn was not playing, except to the dozy tart who was doing the filming...I despair of you lot at times.

Leave the yanks alone, this stupid woman could have come from here (we have our fair share)

Of course we have our fair share of stupid women over here...your post attests to that..the fact remain she was a Yank...

The fawn was not playing it was defending itself. It never once attempted to follow the dog when the dog moved away, as would have been the case if it was playing. It was jumping at the dog when the dog was near enough to be a threat and the tail wagging was obviously fear. No blame on the dog - just it's insensitive owner.

I'm inclined to agree about this not being so cute. I think people are projecting dog body language onto the fawn.

After a few seconds watching, I realized that the fawn didn't look like it was playing back. It looked like a DOG would look if it was playing (wiggling its tail and charging), but not like a fawn.

I think it was defending itself - standing its ground and then when the dog would "attack", it would defend back. I'm guessing it didn't run away b/c it was too late for that - it knew the "predator" would just chase it and get it. (I'm surprised its mother wasn't around - I've never seen a deer that young in the wild w/out its mother very close by.)

I know it's super cute and people get upset when you burst their bubble with cute animal videos, but I don't think this is being correctly interpreted as dog and fawn "playing together". The dog certainly didn't have malicious intentions, but the fawn did not necessarily know that.

Any real deer experts want to weigh in?

Not a deer expert, but I've been around cows, goats, and horses, which are also herbivores, and I'm inclined to agree with you. The baby was afraid to turn its back and run.

Not a deer expert, but I do know that the tail stiffly raised to show the white is a sign of alarm.

This is not a video of a dog playing with a fawn, this is a video of a dog behaving as a preditor worrying prey. Bambi the cute fawn wasn't actually playing at all, it was swinging its rump around and keeping his little sharp hooves in strike readiness, that fawn wasn't lunging and playing, it was lunging and striking and the dog was circling circling the entire time. Its rediculous for anyone to actually belive this was a playful video, if it were little Bambi would be bouncing after the dog while it went to mark his territory on the electric post.
If you believe otherwise, you need to review this video and watch the fawn 'playing'. Poor little mite.

I don't find this cute at all. The poor little thing must have been exhausted. What a very silly woman to stand filming this and not just get her dog back under control. And I say this as a dog owner and lover.

I am sorry that I totally disagree with you. I think the video is lovely and the dog is a credit to the owners. I am a dog owner as well of 6 working springers and needless to say a dog lover. That dog was perfectly in control and was not causing any problem to the fawn. They were playing and that is all.

I am sorry but I totally disagree. I too am a dog owner of six working springer spaniels and indeed a dog lover. The dog in the video is a credit to the owner and is totally in control. The fawn did not appear to be in any difficulty and could have run off if it wanted to. They were both in fact only playing.

What an idiotic thing to say. The fawn was terrified and was attempting to defend itself. How on earth do you think it could run away, still being unsteady on its feet? The owner had no idea how to control her dog, WHICH WAS TAKING NO NOTICE OF HER AT ALL!!. I also am a dog owner and a dog lover, but I do have him under control. There was nothing cute about this at all. Showed a complete lack of imagination and empathy from the owner,(as indeed do you) and , as an owner of 6 working springers, a surprising ignorance of appreciating when a dog is and is not under control.

I have a working Springer, and I assure you, when he spots things like deer, rabbits, birds and cats and wants to chase, he's called firmly back to my side, and he obeys my command. I am his pack leader, I say when he can run and chase. This dog in video was owned by a foolish person who had no idea at all about dog behavior. I am a dog lover, but more importantly, I am master.

Watching this it is hard to believe the dog is actually a carnivore. ( Domestic dogs can actually survive without meat...) But such is the nature of domesticity & thousands of years of human interaction.
The dog simply wants to ;play & the fawn does not know any fear.

The poor terrified fawn was in great danger. I worked in a public park, where dog owners let their dogs off their leads often. One soft old Collie wandered around as I chatted with it's owner. The Collie suddenly jumped on a swan signet nearby & killed it. The dog then wandered back to us stunned onlookers! The dog owner was mortified. He loved the swans. Be warned - dogs are wild underneith.

Yes, dogs are decended from wolves..... they are meat eaters.
The point is, and it's clear, the retriever is playing. And I suspect so too was the collie in your instance....
I don't think the fawn was terrified.... it doesn't have any danger imprinted into it yet. It did however remind me of ( on TV ) seeing a Thompsons Gazelle fawn overrun by a cheetah.
As the cheetah regained its breath after the chase, the exhausted fawn does the only thing it knows, it tries to suckle the cheetah ! Oh dear !
