Hyundai Car Has Acceleration Failure, Crashes Dramatically (VIDEO)

A word of warning: the video we have for you above is not for the faint-hearted. Also, if you have any concerns about the condition of your car's brakes and/or gearbox at the moment, you may want to get them sorted before you click play.

The footage comes from the dashboard camera of a Hyundai Sonata YF sedan on a street in South Korean city of Daegu, with a couple driving down the road when suddenly the vehicle starts accelerating violently up to around 118kmph (74mph).

Careering down the tarmac, it was only a matter of time before it ended up in the back of a far more static object - in this case, another vehicle.

As for what the car's occupants said during the event, the only intelligible words - that aren't expletives - are "What's wrong with my car? What's wrong with my car?"

Daegu Police are now investigating the accident with the help of the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, looking into what could have caused this sticky accelerator pedal incident.

Of course, this isn't the first time something fairly spectacular/gripping/downright worrying has been caught on a dashboard camera. Check out our collection below of some dash cam footage classics...

Those Hyundai cars and broken accelerators, all they ever want to do is drag race, lol

Listen carefully and I am sure you can hear the driver changing up instead of getting into neutral. Standing on the footbrake would surely have kept the speed down or stalled the engine. How about turning off the ignition?
What is really going on here?!!

Listening to the video, it sounds like a car with auto-transmission that's changing up as fast as it can.

Standing on the footbrake might help, but wouldn't cause the car to stop.

If he reacted quickly there's a number of things he could try:

(a) Move the selector lever into 'neutral' or 'park' while hitting the brakes .
(b) Switch the engine off
(c) Move the selector lever into 'reverse'.

Of course, if the computers developed a mind of their own, I guess that there's not much you could do.

It could be an automatic which would account for the gear changing.

There were 14 seconds for the driver to either shove it into neutral or turn off the ignition. I understand the first three or four seconds are probably "what the hell is going on" but then you have to react.

I get the feeling this is a brake accelerator mix up. There seemed to be a distinct lack of braking going on.
