Heavy rain which prompted severe weather warnings for parts of southern England and Wales is moving north, bringing new flood risks, forecasters said.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for large parts of the country from south Wales to East Anglia.

Now forecasters say as much as 40mm of rain could fall in northern England and central and southern Scotland in the next 24 hours.

MeteoGroup forecaster Brendan Jones said: "It has been pretty wet across the UK but much of the heavy rain in the south is moving its way north.

"The focus of the heavy rain will be across northern England and central and southern Scotland, with another 20 to 40mm of rain expected to fall in those areas over the next 24 hours.

"Parts of the Midlands and Yorkshire may also see some lively thunderstorms."

Jones said there was the possibility of snow falling in northern parts of Scotland.

He added: "It's certainly going to feel chilly particularly in Scotland.

"There is a possibility in the Scottish mountains the heavy rain could fall as snow."

Although there is currently just one flood warning in place, the Environment Agency said yesterday there was a risk of localised flooding across the south and south-west of England, south Wales, the Midlands and parts of East Anglia.

The current flood warning is for the lower River Tone in Somerset, while six less serious alerts are also in place in East Anglia, the South East and South West.

Environment Agency flood manager Katharine Evans said: "Following an exceptionally wet April which led to some flooding last week, rivers are high and the ground is saturated, meaning that further rainfall brings with it an increased risk of flooding.

"We are continuing to closely monitor the forecast and rainfall, particularly for rivers in South Wales, Devon and Cornwall. And Environment Agency teams are out on the ground keeping a close watch on river levels, as well as checking defences and clearing any potential blockages to reduce the risk of flooding.

"If flooding does happen, we would urge people to keep away from swollen rivers and not to attempt to walk or drive through floodwater."

Flooding which followed storms and heavy rain last week left one man dead after the car he was travelling in became submerged at a flooded road ford. Despite numerous flood warnings only a small number of properties were flooded across the country.

The continued unsettled weather comes after the wettest April on record, but much of England remains officially in a state of drought following two unusually dry winters in a row.

If the greedy government /councils stopped building houses on flood plains and built reservoirs instead we would not have a problem ! but hey money over people every time:

We live in the country. 2 weeks ago the rain is coming down like "stair rods" - a road sweeper lorry turns up but I noticed that he avoided all of the puddles! Upon asking him why he did this he said that the water he sucked up would fill his tank up and also that water would be deemed as stealing from the water authority!! Why did the council send him out in that weather in the first place ? You tell me!

IOt doesnt say much for the loads opf rubbish comming from the global warming
the weather is more or less normal but expensive

Global warming phenomenon is averaged worldwide. Just because it doesn't happen in your back garden it doesn't mean it's not happening. The more appropriate term is climate change and I think you will agree that weather events seem to be more extreme world-wide now. How much of this is anthropogenic and how much due to "natural" geological and solar cycles is another debate but to deny that there is any climate change is blinkered in my opinion.

RUBBISH = the only warnings from the MET office is for = ((Severe weather warnings have been issued for SW Scotland, Lothian Borders)) & this is only a Beware warning - Not Be-prepared or Take Action warning

the main reason for the hose pipe bans was down to the fact that there are so many underground leaks wasting water rather than us not getting enough rain we will continue to have this problem until the powers that be sort out the leaks makes sense to me

Best thing to do is turn on those hosepipes to make room in the reservoirs for more water ..................... simple

I love this comment. I bet the person who brought hosepipe bans about is feeling really daft now - it has rained ever since then. All our water butts, buckets, etc etc are overflowing - perhaps we could sell water back to the water authority !!!

I watch the news on both ITV and BBC one says it's going to rain all week, and the other says a sunny day, I have not seen any floods, As regard to hose pipe ban, I have a pipe from guttering to a water butt and this water I use for my plants? not difficult!
I also have a water meter, which has saved me a fortune, waste not want not? I think true words?

I missed something somewhere. One day its the combination of rain and dry soil that's causing flooding, then its the combination of rain and saturated ground that's causing it!

Are we out of drought yet??????
