Baby Radhika 'Buried Alive', Child Recovers In Indian Hospital As Arrested Are Made

A month-and-a-half old baby girl is recovering in hospital after her parents apparently tried to bury her alive.

The child, named Radhika, is being treated for dehydration and severe malnutrition in a hospital in Meerut, India, following her ordeal, the BBC reports.

The horrifying incident came to light on Wednesday when a trustee at a burial ground heard crying and alerted police.

Radhika was apparently found wrapped in a bundle by a half-dug grave, alongside a number of ritual offerings.

The child’s mother Bharati Rani and father Dinesh Kumar were arrested, as was Dinesh’s brother, who was reportedly with the couple.

According to NDTV, police were informed Radhika was being buried on the advice of a “godman” or spiritual guru, who said the act would protect the rest of the family’s children from serious illnesses in the future.

The couple had already lost one child to illness, One India said.

Radhika’s uncle and father will now face charges of attempted murder, police say. But Bharati told the BBC: “It’s an absolute lie. Tell me which mother would want to kill her own child.”

If sickening to read a story like this especially when there are couples all over the world trying to have children but for reasons medical they can't. Extremely sad and I hope they are punished extremely.

"According to NDTV, police were informed Radhika was being buried on the advice of a “godman” or spiritual guru, who said the act would protect the rest of the family’s children from serious illnesses in the future."

Mind boggling how, in this day and age, this type of ignorance and superstition can still be so prevalent in some areas of the world. So many terrible things done simply because people refuse to learn about the world around them and cling to ridiculous beliefs.
That's saying quite a bit, yes, and there's a huge discussion to be had... but there are plenty of things out there that are NOT a mystery any more. Illnesses and how they are spread, for example.

Child sacrifice does happen in India although it is more common is some African countries like Uganda. There are villages in Africa where children are killed for all sorts of superstitious reasons such as teeth coming through in the wrong order or witch doctors not having given permission for a couple to start a family. http://omochild.org/

Also, infanticide of female babies or their termination in pregnancy is even more widespread in India and China, (& most likely other countries as well). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1QuMQxKagQ

It's possible this baby girl was the victim of either of the above. Officially these practices are usually against the law, even in those countries but unless more effort is made to enforce the law nothing will change. More publicity is needed to embarrass those countries into taking more action to protect the rights of children. Not just to prevent murders but to prevent other breaches of their rights. For example the forced marriage of underage girls. Some as young as 8 to 11 years old are forced to marry much older men, which surely amounts to paedophilia. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/06/child-brides/gorney-text

The mother of a girl who gave evidence in the trial of nine Asian men convicted of child sex offences has shown this newspaper evidence that suggests the authorities were aware of the abuse as long ago as 2002.

An official report by a sexual health adviser, which was passed on to social workers and police in 2005, detailed the kidnap and rape of an underage girl in Rochdale, where the gang was operating, but the authorities failed to act.

They have now been accused of ignoring evidence of the rapes because they were frightened of being accused of racism.

And this horror is happening not only in India. China is another good example about that, but no one criticises that because all the countries use China as their factory!
