British Business Bosses Are 'Whingeing' Says Philip Hammond

Philip Hammond

A Cabinet minister hit out at big company bosses accusing them of "whingeing" and refusing to invest in jobs and the British economy.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond stepped up the government's onslaught on business, claiming large firms were unwilling to take risks despite sitting on a "large pile of cash".

His comments came on Sunday night after Foreign Secretary William Hague told business to stop complaining about the Government - insisting the only answer to Britain's economic woes was hard work.

Ministers were clearly stung by criticisms from business leaders that the Queen's Speech last week contained nothing to stimulate the stagnant economy.

"Large businesses are sitting on a pretty large pile of cash," Hammond told BBC Radio 5 Live's Pienaar's Politics.

"What we have got to try and do is persuade businesses to take the plunge, to just use some of their cash pile, to take a judgment about where demand is going, where the economy is going in the future, and be prepared to back their judgment
with investment in British jobs and capacity in the British economy.

"That's what the private sector is about, that's why people in private business can legitimately say they should make profits because they do take risks - it is about persuading them to get out there and invest and take some risks."

Asked if he was accusing businesses of whingeing, he replied: "They are, yes, I suppose in a way whingeing about it."

Walking around my hometown recently I was shocked by how many local businesses have had to close down. It's starting to look like a ghost town. If the council reduced business rates so that shops could actually make a profit instead of a loss then they would be able to employ people. It's the same all over North Wales. We have children leaving school now who may never know paid employment.
We need less red tape, cheaper fuel, lower business rates, especially for small businesses and we need to improve education so that school leavers are not turned out into the world unable to read, write and speak correctly.
And stop allowing large supermarkets and businesses to squirrel away money abroad instead of paying tax on it here.
Does anyone understand how we can afford to give monetary aid to other countries when our own is in dire straits? Give taxpayers money back to the taxpayers.

This comes at the same time as William Hague's moan about the country not working hard enough to pull itself out of recession. This concerted attack is clear evidence of a Government that has run out of ideas. I'm not a business man - I'm not clever enough. But presumably big companies have got a pretty good idea about money and how to invest it - that's why they got 'big' in the first place. Thus they are probably better judges of the economy than cabinet ministers with vested interests, who refuse to accept responsibility for the state of the country they claim to govern.

Here we go - a slanging match. Just what we need right now. A start to growth could come if politicians, business leaders and unions came together to plan a future...but that may be asking too much.

The solution to the UK economic problem is very simple, bring back 95% mortgages.

They're sitting on a cash pile because they don't trust the con/dem government not to suddenly pull the rug from under their feet. The problem is that alternative is even worse. It's not a happy time to be in business in the UK.

O my god
what a fool Philip Hammond is , if the Government stopped high taxs on all the goods as well as fuel to the man on the street then and only than would private business invest and take some risks.

Mmm... wasn't it banks 'taking risks' that put us into the situation we're in at the moment?

(Mind you, I still wonder what it was they did with their 'record profits' that they made year on year prior to the collapse.)
