Tuberculosis Death
Tragedy: Schoolgirl Alina Sarag died in January from TB but was told she was suffering from mental health issues

A 15-year-old schoolgirl who died of tuberculosis was told her physical deterioration was due to mental health problems, despite having previously been treated for the disease.

Alina Sarag passed away in January, after visiting a string of health professionals who advised her that she may have bulimia and needed to see a psychiatrist or a spiritual healer to deal with it.

This left her broken-hearted, her father, Sultan Sarag, told Birmingham Coroner’s Court.

Giving evidence at the inquest, which is expected to hear from around 20 witnesses, Mr Sarag said Alina became unwell after she returned from a holiday to Pakistan in August 2010.

Detailing his and his daughter's efforts to find out what was wrong with her in the ensuing weeks and months, Mr Sarag described the diagnosis of possible mental health problems as "absolute nonsense".

Alina, from Sparkbrook, Birmingham, was treated at four different hospitals in the West Midlands between August and October of 2010 as she lost weight and suffered from repeated vomiting.

In a statement read to the court by Coroner Aidan Cotter, Mr Sarag confirmed that his daughter had been treated for TB after being diagnosed with the disease in March 2009 during screening at her school.

The 15-year-old appeared to recover from the condition and was discharged from a chest clinic in October 2009 after telling medics she felt fine, and her family assumed her life would get back to normal.

But the normally "outgoing and bubbly" teenager went to see a GP on August 20 2010, just six days after she had returned from Pakistan.

A series of visits to hospitals, health centres and the doctors' surgery then took place as Alina's health became progressively worse.

Mr Sarag, who also gave verbal evidence to the coroner, told the court: "I was watching my daughter get slowly worse and worse each day.

"I would spend hours rubbing her back, arms, head and neck to try and help ease her pain."

During a visit to Birmingham Children's Hospital in October 2010, the inquest heard, Alina was barely able to walk and Mr Sarag told staff he was worried that her TB had "reactivated".

Mr Sarag added: "I knew something was not right as she was in such a poor state but couldn't get anyone to listen to me.

"I know she felt like no-one was listening to her."

Towards the end of October, Alina returned to her GP's surgery and was told that she may have bulimia and would need to see a psychiatrist, the inquest heard.

"It totally broke her heart," Mr Sarag said of the diagnosis. "No-one bothered listening to us.

"I remember specifically asking for another TB test for Alina to make sure it was not the cause of her illness."

The inquest heard that Alina died on January 6 last year, having been admitted to Birmingham Children's Hospital the previous evening.

I don't want to be hated but it's clear this article misses out a LOT of information.

The UK health system is once of the best in the world - and doctors have to follow very specific protocols when it comes to cases like TB.
IF bulimia and mental health problems were being considered, then it's pretty clear that the tests have been done. No comment is shown in this article on the side of the doctors - THAT is poor journalism. It's easy to write stories of how bad the healthcare system is, bad news sells and plays on the fear of people.

As a medic myself, TB does NOT always present with the classic symptoms. There are some rare cases of TB which are missed by experts - and this seems on the details I have read, so @gcock10 - please don't be so ignorant.

Furthermore, what this article does not highlight is the sheer number of missed appointments by the girl & family. If the father was truly concerned about the health of her daughter AND didnt trust the NHS then he should have just gone private.

There is much more to this story than what's on the surface.

I've seen a lot of comments about immigration. And I think we need to be very careful about 'placing blame' for the rise in TB on immigration. Being sick is not a crime, and we should not penalize people for being sick. TB was on the decline until the 1980s, and increased due to drug resistance.

What happened to Alina was a failure of the health system. In order to reduce TB cases in the future, it’s very important that health commissioners, especially in parts of the country with the highest rates of TB, prioritise the delivery of appropriate clinical and public health TB services.

The open door immgration policy of the UK is obviously going to increase the risk of disease. The increase in TB cases will continue until this madness is stopped. It would seem the indigenous Brit has no human rights with the clowns in the Westminster circus.

why have we let this tidal wave of bankrupting desease ridden effluent wash upon our shores? this country will be bankrupt & infested with once ridded deseases very soon if we do not get a grip with immigration. all prospecting migrants should pay for All their screening, treatments etc before they're even allowed to board a plane/boat destined for the soft touch UK. all travel operaters should be heavily penalised for allowing lassaiz faire attitudes to uncontrolled immigration with not correctly checking documents prior to entry.

The main symptoms of TB are usually portrayed as persistent cough (the disease attacks the lungs) fever, night sweats, weight loss( hence the old term consumption) and sometimes blood in the sputum. There is only mention in this article of weight loss; which makes me wonder whether the other symptoms were not present or not recognised. 50% of people who contact active TB die of it.Diagnostic tools are simple, Xrays and microbiological tests will quickly establish the onset of TB. There has been an increase in the number of TB cases reported in the UK in the past 20 years. Over 9000 cases were reported in 2009 with over one third of them in London. Certainly when I was still working locally in the NHS almost all of our reported TB cases were amongst asian children attending our colleges.Globally it is the 2nd most common infectious disease cause of death after HIV/AIDS.The vaccine spoken of is the BCG which is no longer given in the UK except to "at risk groups" but provides a decreasing 10 year protection from childhood. I can't understand, given the weight loss and the previous history why this child was misdiagnosed. I equally cannot understand why the father didn't insist on an xray given his knowledge of the girl's history. Had she been my daughter I would, as a last resort, have taken her to a private consultant and worried about the payment for it afterwards. A very sad case indeed.

We had eliminated TB in this Country but it has been re introduced by immigrants. Why didn't they have health checks before being allowed entry into our Country which would have prevented this from happening in the first place. Anyone coming back from visiting any Country which have high incidences of TB should have a test for it and if proved positive they should be treated to prevent the spread here in the UK.

I wonder if there is actually any need for GPs nowadays. It is easy enough to self diagnose especially with the help of modern technology. Most graduates who specialise in general practice are usually the ones who didn't excell at medical school and took the easiest, highest paid option.

Had a foreign doctor tell me it was in my head and changed surgery. But still had a problem until It was so bad that Reddoc picked the real problem up. Now jusst had another foreign doctor tell a member of my family that her health problems were psychological. Naturally changed surgery.

it seems that all too often we are hearing about more and more Clinical negligence and on a national scale. What is the cost of an xray or the investigation of a blood sample? This young girl's life was discarded when her father was told by his GP that she may have met a boy while on holiday and is pining for him? I ask you, what kind of a crazy clinical diagnose was that? That GP and a few others should be struck off. Are we going back to witch doctors and sooth sayers to find a cure for our pains and illnesses? They are over paid and away too often on their Caribbean and ski holidays. The need to save money and time is killing innocent people.

The arrogances of a university degree or people that can pass examinations but or ignorant of education, once again I state “intelligence is not what you know but the way you use what you know”. No doubt that many of these mechanical medical practitioners have been classified as brilliant people and highly academically intelligent but doctor’s they are not. Anyone who has gone to one of these industrial buildings known as medical centres would have come across these individuals who should never be practising.

The medical profession has some great family doctors there is also similar types in hospitals, but I have known people who have died because of their professions arrogance. The problem then is the doors close and protectionism takes hold as you try to expose the failings of any practitioner, most used excuse “we dealt with the case in conjunction with the symptoms as presented to us”. Nice phrase, what they are actually saying is “it’s their fault for dying”, compassion is not part of academic education the drive is to pass exams not to treat the sick.

The profession rules on the so called professionals so nothing is going to change, people will continue to die, they will still state “we have taken this on board and lessons have been learnt”. In fact what they are saying is “up yours” and the professional bodies will continue to protect these un-emotional mechanical medical practitioners, who think they are doctors but doctors they are not.
