Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, has retired from football aged 35.
The Dutchman saw out his career with Spanish Primera Liga side Malaga, whom he made just 10 starts for as the Qatari-backed club finished fourth to qualify for next season's Champions League.
It was at PSV Eindhoven where he made his mark in the late 90s and early noughties. After a prolific spell with the Eridivisie side, Manchester United agreed a £19m deal to sign the 23-year-old in April 2000, but a knee injury Van Nistelrooy suffered dashed any chances of a move to the Premier League side, while he also missed Euro 2000.
A year later he belatedly joined the Premiership champions, where he would go on to score 150 goals from 219 appearances in five seasons. Sir Alex Ferguson hailed him as the club's best goalscorer since Denis Law, as Van Nistelrooy won the league, the FA Cup and League Cup.

In 2006 he fell out with Ferguson and was transferred to Real Madrid for £11m at the age of 30. He scored 31 goals in his debut season as Madrid won their first title since 2003.
He followed that up with 20 goals the following campaign as Los Blancos retained their title, before Pep Guardiola took charge of Barcelona to herald three years of domestic dominance for the Catalans.

Van Nistelrooy then featured briefly for Hamburg between January 2010 and June 2011, prior to ending his career in southern Spain.
For Holland, he struck 35 times in 70 games, averaging a goal every other game. He also finished second joint top goalscorer at Euro 2004 alongside Wayne Rooney.
