Fuel Cost
Fuel duty could rise

Motorists could face a 50% rise in fuel duty in future years to cover a £13bn hole in Treasury coffers, according to a report.

The gap in public finances will come from increasing use of more fuel-efficient cars and a switch to electric vehicles, the RAC Foundation-commissioned report said.

It added that while the fuel duty collected by the Exchequer stands at 1.7% of gross domestic product (GDP), this rate will tumble to 1.1% of GDP by 2029.

The report said vehicle excise duty (VED) would also drop over this period, from 0.4% of GDP to 0.1%, with the combined fall leading to the £13 billion shortfall.

RAC Foundation director Professor Stephen Glaister said: "If the Chancellor was faced with a £13bn shortfall in motoring tax revenue today, he would need to push the rate of fuel duty up from 58p per litre to 87p per litre to fill the financial black hole.

"Clearly there is no guarantee that future rises in duty rates will be limited to inflation, as is current policy."

He added: "As drivers endure record prices at the pumps they might be surprised to learn that future governments face a drought in motoring tax income.

"The irony is that while ministers encourage us to buy greener, leaner cars, they are being forced to look at ways of clawing back the money motorists think they will be saving. This isn't scaremongering. The Treasury has already announced a review of VED bands to ensure drivers make a fair contribution to the public finances even as cars become more fuel-efficient."

The report was prepared for the RAC Foundation by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

Institute director Paul Johnson said motoring taxation did not reflect the costs drivers impose on others and that revenue from petrol was set to fall.

He added: "A national system of charging related to mileage and congestion, largely replacing the current system of fuel taxation, would help solve both those problems."

Obviously VED income will drop as they keep making cars exempt and charging as little as £20 a year to tax some of them, or zero for electric things.............totally stupid idea, all cars should be the same rate as they all use the roads. Why should a small car driver drive around almost for free when someone with a larger car sitting on the driveway most of the week can pay 20 times as much. And the green issue is all boll** before some tree hugger decides to spout off about that !!. If you use the roads then pay the same as everybody else

Another scarey story to con us into buying electric/green vehicles.
Of course as time goes on fuel and most things will rise in price.
The RAC should be told to stop this scaremongering.
We will have queues at petrol station next because people read this and don't read it properly.

There has already been a report that says motorists will not be buying electric cars as they are too expensive and give limited mileage. Charging per mile was tried by the then Norwich Union insurance company, which I had in my Vectra 4 years ago and they cancelled the scheme. Never got a proper explanation, but I would imagine it was not profitable.

What will happen is all vehicles will be fitted with smart black boxes and the driver will be charged per mile travelled. No escape, also traffic violations will be automatically charged. The technology is already in place.

this green energy is a laugh. they still need oil and gas to make the electrity and the government will just tax that so status quo

A few years ago Gordon Brown in an effort to make us buy diesel cars brough the price of diesel down to 2p less than petrol. So we all bought diesel cars and surprise, he put the price of diesel up and now it is five or six pence dearer than petrol. So whatever we do we know we are going to get conned.

If the Idiots were to think properly and lower fuel prices people would buy MORE fuel and the Government would get more in their coffers. Put fuel prices up, goods in shops go up, people buy less buisnesses close.

I totally agree with your comment, but unfortunately the country is run by people who have no common sense, even one of their own MP said they were posh boys not knowing the price of milk,

The government will simply add new taxes to greener cars. Like charging for charging. the fact is that when the whole of China gets a car each Europe will not be able to buy fuel because they have all the cash and we don't. In a global market they will price us out and we will become third world. at least it will be good for the environment.
