Jessica Alba Reveals Being A Sex Symbol Made Her Feel 'Objectified And Uncomfortable'

By Posted: Updated: 15/05/2012 18:02

Jessica Alba has posed in plenty of glamorous photo shoots, but the movie star has stunned fans by revealing that she felt "objectified" earlier in her career.

The 31-year-old U.S actress, who’s appeared in blockbusters such as Sin City and Fantastic Four, told Marie Claire: “I had a show [Fox’s Dark Angel] that premiered when I was 19. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed.

“I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That’s what people expected…I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable. I wanted to be chic and elegant!”

The movie star said that these days she dresses for herself

These days, she’s much more content to blend in.

She told the magazine: “I like to get positive attention. But if I have a choice between someone noticing in a negative way what I’m wearing and going, What was she thinking? or someone not noticing what I’m wearing, I would rather not make a statement at all and just have a good conversation instead.”

When Ms Alba does dress up, she explained that she does it for herself, not any male admirers.

Jessica Alba has said she used to feel objectified

She added: “Now that I’m older, I’ve learned how to own it, but I’m still not very overt. There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself.

"It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I’m going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge.”

Jessica Alba appears on the cover of the June issue of Marie Claire, which hits newsstands on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Of Course you are objectified if you are an attractive woman, or even a woman who is not beautiful. Men have to be cajoled beyond that point, unless you are supporting your Career on your looks. If your Career is dependent on your looks then enjoy the Objectivation while you can and make the men pay!!

At 31 and a couple of kids destroying her once "objectiied body", she won't have much to worry about cuz in Hollywood she's a starlet whose just about run its course. Now if she could "act" it may prolong her career such as it is. I don't recall watching her movies for her abilities (guilty).

Jessica - don't be like Lucy Lawless or Neve Campbell and wait until you're past your prime to do a full nude scene. You're like Halle Berry, you've held that card for a while, now it is time for your Monsters Ball. Think of it as art.

Halle Berry is forever sexy and looks youthful. I don't think anyone in hollywood can beat that without surgery past 30. Another favourite of mine is Kelly Hu and Lucie Liu. mix race girls rock.all naturelles.Fresh as dew. Jessica Alba will also enjoy the benefits of mixed heritage .she is not going to age.

Objectified and uncomfortable, but not too much judging by the roles she played.

Without her looks she would not have ever been an actress.

Also she commented after giving birth that it ruined her body. So she is full of it.

She's given Marie Claire a nice bit of free publicity. I wonder if that was in her contract.

Some celebrities (like unknown human beings) are confident and hungry for attention while others are not.

Jessica Alba is not concerned about money, greed, or men. She just wants to be in her own comfortable body.

I don't blame her.

Step 0) Have paid staff apply makeup, clothing design, hair, etc etc
Step 1) Put myself in front of camera
Step 2) Collect $
Step 3) Complain that I am being objectified

So your saying that because she's an actress and gets paid a lot she deserves to be portrayed as an fantasy object?

I think you missed the point, but yes it is fair to view celebrities, models, actresses, strippers, performers, etc as objects. This is what they work for, what they want, and why they get paid. They use their body as a product. If you believe this to be untrue, notice how many popular icons have bodies which people like to look at, compared to those that do not. Notice that the appeal of seeing something you like, results in dollars being spent and ultimately earned by the performer/whatever.

As interesting as it would be to hear the intellect of a model, the political views of a stripper, or the economic preference of an actress, it seems more likely we will stick with *watching* them and viewing them as entertainment objects.

She freely chooses to portray herself as a fantasy object.
