Queen's Diamond Jubilee Tour Of London Kicks Off In Bromley, Merton And Richmond

Queen To Begins London Jubilee Tour On Bromley High St

The Queen and Prince Philip will visit Bromley, Merton and Richmond on Tuesday as part of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK.

Traffic hit the boroughs early on, as excited residents queued to see the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh grace south London with their royal presence.

The royal couple's day will begin at the aptly named Queen's Gardens in Bromley where they will be taken around a display of fashion exhibits aimed to celebrate London as a Global Centre of Fashion.

Her Majesty, whose bright suits and love of hats make up her own distinctive style will then meet designers based in the capital.

After celebrating boutique London fashion, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will then indulge in more high street style.

The royal pair will visit the Glades Shopping Centre and Bromley High Street at 11.30am. The incongruence of seeing Her Majesty on the high street prompted amusement on Twitter, with Bromley trending on the social media site.

"Queen heading to Bromley today, hope she goes to the pool with the wave machine & water slides, then treats herself at the vending machines" wrote one Tweeter.

Another Twitter user had a different suggestion for Her Majesty:

Guests attending a Jubilee Road Street Party will also welcome the royal visitors to the borough before the Queen and Duke meet local business people.

However there were some businesses which capitalised on the less than great British weather to encourage well-wishers inside.

The royal party will then travel to Mitcham to attend a British picnic-themed reception at St Mark's Church of England Academy, where groups of high achievers from 13 south London boroughs will be gathered.

Later in the day the Queen and Duke will be joined by Princess Alexandra when they visit the Wild London festival in Richmond Park, celebrating the capital's woodlands, parks and gardens.

Afterwards the royals will have afternoon tea in Holly Lodge Gardens and unveil a plaque for a new holly tree, and will meet young and adult riders from Riding for the Disabled.
