Donna Summer Dead: 10 Of Her Greatest Hits (LISTEN)

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 17/05/2012 18:51

Five-time Grammy Award winner Donna Summer was renowned for being the Queen of high-energy disco.

She shot to fame in the 1970s singing a string of classic disco hits, including Love to Love You Baby, Bad Girls and Hot Stuff.

During her 40-year career, she worked with the likes of Giorgio Moroder, David Geffen, Stock Aitken and Waterman, and Barbra Streisand. Her last single, To Paris with Love, topped the US dance chart in 2010.

In 1977 Summer was interviewed about her single I Feel Love and said "this song became a hit because it has a high-energy vibe".

Following that interview, the description "high-energy" was increasingly applied to high-tempo disco music - or Hi-NRG, as it became known.

In 2004, Summer was inducted to the Dance Music Hall of Fame, alongside The Bee Gees and Barry Gibb. Her classic song, I Feel Love, was also inducted that night.

Summer had been been suffering from cancer and passed away in Florida, her publicist confirmed.

Very sad to hear we lost an icon. The disco queen who made people during the disco era feel good about themselves. My condolescence to Donna Summers family. Donna Summers made a name for herself during the disco era (1976 - 1983). Her seductive & sexual image put her on top as a icon for fans to admire & adore her during that era. The only regret I have for Donna Summers is she couldn't transfer her seductive style of the disco era into the pop era once the disco era ended in 1983. I'm quite sure if she was surrounded by the right management or talent relation, she could have transform to the pop era & became one of the hottest female artist during the 80's. It would have been nice to see her transformation image like Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, Pointer Sisters & Janet Jackson. God bless you. Now she will sit at the the icon table with Tina Marie, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Barry White, Minnie Ripperton, Teddy Pendergrass & Marvin Gaye.

'This Time I Know It's For Real' was huge when going to disco's as a kid in the late 80's. I vividly remember going to a Glasgow warehouse that same year in 89, it was blaring out from the stereo with the whole staff singing it, I'll never forget that.

Equally, if not more, 'I Feel Love' a decade earlier was ground-breaking, not just for disco, but for ambience music. Remember seeing it on TOTP, the eroticism, the hypnotism, great voice.

Respect to Donna.

Didn't know the term HI-NRG was unknowingly coined by Miss Summer herself. Very cool.
