Energy Minister Charles Hendry Accidentally Sits On Ed Davey's Lap In Commons

Posted: Updated: 17/05/2012 14:31

Being grilled by MPs in the House of Commons can sometimes be a gruelling task for cabinet ministers, but at least they can rely on their colleagues not to sit on them. Usually.

Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt was reduced to a fit of giggles on Thursday when Tory energy minister Charles Hendry forgot to look behind him before sitting back down on the green benches - or rather onto the lap Lib Dem energy secretary Ed Davey.

Munt, unable to get her question to the minister out due to laughter Speaker John Bercow intervened to ask what the problem was.

"Was it something I said?" he asked. "I hope not."

Having leaped off his bosses lap, Hendry stood to explain to the Speaker why MPs were all laughing.

"Mr Speaker, the humour was because I inadvertently sat on the secretary of state which shows our commitment to work seamlessly together in this coalition," he said.

As a cervical cancer survivor I’m urging everyone to back Cancer Research UK’s latest campaign -The answer is plain.

It calls for all branding to be removed from tobacco packaging, to discourage children from starting to smoke.

Though my cancer wasn’t caused by smoking, I want to do everything I can to protect young people from the frightening experience I have been through.
Glitzy packets are one of the last ways the tobacco industry can still market its lethal products and research shows that the striking logos and distinctive designs make cigarettes more appealing to children.

So as the Government consults on whether to put all tobacco in standardised ‘plain’ packs of uniform size, shape and design, I’m asking people to show their support for this vital measure by signing The answer is plain petition.

This is not about ‘the nanny state’ and it’s not about curbing the freedoms of adult smokers. It’s about giving children one less reason to take up a deadly and addictive habit which kills half of all its long term users.

The big tobacco companies are doing everything they can to stop this – but we’ve got to stand up to them and protect our children.

You can help Cancer Research UK to stub out tobacco marketing to children by signing the petition at www.theanswerisplain.org

Kind regards,

Mrs Suzanne Fernando 1'st Scottish Cancer Campaigns Ambassador CRUK

Lucky Ed Davey didn't try to show.Charles Hendry his Worther's Original when he sat on his knee, which if the TV adverts are to be believed is aparantly the custom in the UK? I thank heaven I live in Catalunya.
