Harris Academy Accused Of Bullying Pupils Over Uniform Rules

School Uniform

A school has been accused of "bullying" its pupils into colouring in their shoes with black marker in order to meet uniform regulations.

Harris Academy in South Norwood, London, allegedly put 12-year-old student Ayla Roberts in a referral room because she had pink stitching on her otherwise completely black shoes, Your Local Guardian reported.

Ayla's mother, Sophie, called the measures "completely over the top".

"They wanted her to wear these community plimsolls, but I don’t know where they have been."

Sophie told the local paper she used mascara to hide the stitching while Sophie's other son, Lamel, was "forced" to use black permanent marker to cover white lining at the top of his school shoes.

"It is ridiculous. I was in hospital at the time and found out they had bullied him into ruining his own shoes," she added. "It is vandalism. They are not cheap shoes."

The academy, which was rated outstanding in 2010 by Ofsted, has around 1,100 pupils on its school roll.

The school said it would not comment on individual circumstances but a spokesperson said:

"It is important to the Academy, and to other students and staff, that everyone looks smart and wears their uniform correctly.

"It is important to be consistent in how school rules are applied and parents and carers are very supportive of this."

In 2011, charity Family Action warned more academies and free schools were putting parents under pressure by demanding costly school uniform items.

The increasing cost of branded uniform, coupled with local authorities cutting clothing grants, was "breaking the bank for poorer families".

I'm surprised they don't issue the kids with carpet slippers...surely the headteacher could get them from his boss at a massively subsidised rate!

Hope the teachers are enjoying their guard duty. 'Tinpot' and 'Dictator' comes to mind.

Well nothing wrong here. I had to purchase shoe dye to do the same thing when I was in school. It is completely normal growing up in the British School system in the british islands and commonwealth states in Africa and the Caribbean. Parents should know the rules! In the caribbean if your sons don't follow the hair cut policy, the teachers would cut your hair so you look like a respectable lad and your parents would agree with the teachers, the teachers are the law!

The Teacher's job is hard enough without having to waste time and resources applying these rules. Parent's know the script before their kids set out in the morning. All they are doing is teaching their kids to be rebellious.

the teachers should wear school uniform also not just the pupils

This isn't bullying.

At the start of the year I'm sure pupils would have been supplied with a list of requirements for their school uniform which would have included black shoes. Not black shoes with bright colours on them.

The schools are trying to instil discipline and pride and yet again the moaning parents are the ones hitting the headlines. If they don't like it then remove the children and then their support of the school and parental responibilities won't be required.

Completely correct Molly. This mother wants to change thegoal posts. Whether the shoes were cheap or not has no bearing on the matter. No one will tell her what to do.

what on earth is going on?? a school insisting that pupils follow their rules is now 'bullying' them?? If the school punished a pupil for breaking other rules, such as punching her children, I wonder if this parent would think that was bullying too?

I agree with all the other posts that school uniform should be designed to be affordable for all and available from a variety of shops. Having spent many years talking to parents about their childrens' uniform though, some people will come up with any excuse going for assisting their children in breaking the rules. they are also the ones that then go complaining to the local papers.

A school uniform gives a pupil a sense of disipline and comformity that sometimes has to be met later in life. There's plenty of time for individuality regarding dress code outside of school and working hours.

Agreed. But also Uniform is by definition an equaliser, and is designed to ensure that children from more affluent homes cannot dress better or differently to those from the poorest ones. And that includes pink trim or stitching on black shoes.

Parents know the school rules before the shoes obtained. Rules are meant to be applied.

Parents should comply with the School's regulation on uniform, it creates some sort of equality in the school But no parent should be forced to buy anything from school which can be bought more cheaply outside the school. teachers know how to deal with real poverty in the cases of children whose parents may not be able to afford school uniform.

In the article the mother claimed that the shoes were not cheap and had been effectively vandalised. So I'm afraid that line of argument is not valid.

Oh dear! Of course they have to wear designer shoes (the not cheap ones) don't they! LOL! But there are black ones available with tiny logos. Majority of schools have this policy. BUT on the other hand whilst I understand they want children to look smart, I think it is disgusting that parents are forced to buy one type of expensive jumper that is often too short for tall pupils, so you are forced to buy two sizes too big. I think parents should be allowed to buy the badge to put it on a cheaper better fitting jumper.

Uniforms should be made locally and subsidized. We need the work. We have the people.
High quality footwear for schoolchildren can be made nationally and subsidized.

We are a rich country. Let's start behaving like one. And not a third world country that has to bow to the rich.
09:00 AM on 05/18/2012
Subsidised by whom, exactly. Seems to me that everybody wants something for nothing these days. The whole point about school uniform is that it is a great equaliser. Rich kids are no better able to display wealth than poor kids, because they are obliged to dress in precisely the same way. And black shoes means black shoes, not black and pink ! That's why it is called u n i f o r m !
12:26 AM on 05/18/2012
Since my sons school became an academy the provider of the uniform has changed, the cost of everything has risen considerably, his PE t-shirt is £12 dearer, but it's exactly the same as the old one, the quality isn't very good either and we don't have a choice in where to buy it because the tiniest difference from their policy and he gets punished.
04:18 AM on 05/18/2012
Remove him from the school in protest, stating why you are doing it and publicising the fact in your local paper, and send him to one you are happy with.

Harrow is an outstanding school. Eton is an outstanding school. I doubt that Harris Academy is an outstanding school despite what the half witted inspectors say.
12:16 AM on 05/18/2012
an outstanding school produces the best results from the pupils it has. i'm pretty sure that a lot of the bankers and politicians that have us heading into financial crisis came from harrow and eton.
