Abu Qatada Bail Hearing Set For End Of May

Abu Qatada could be freed on bail by the end of the month

Abu Qatada bail hearing has been set for 28 May, meaning that the radical cleric could released on bail by the end of the month.

The man once described by a judge as 'Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe', will have his application for bail heard by a senior immigration judge on 28 May, the Judicial Communications Office said.

The radical cleric is being held in a high security prison while he fights deportation to Jordan over terror charges.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: "We believe Qatada poses a real risk to national security and will continue vigorously to resist any application for him to be bailed."

Qatada's 10-year battle against deportation is in the hands of the British courts after the 51-year-old lost his attempt to make a final appeal to Europe's human rights judges earlier this month.

His lawyers immediately applied for him to be released on bail as it looks likely that deportation proceedings will still take many months.

The political situation in Jordan has also worsened in recent months, casting fresh doubt on the UK's ability to deport him, they claim.

The hearing will be held before Mr Justice Mitting at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) in central London at 2pm on 28 May.

Home Secretary Theresa May is likely to refuse any application by Qatada's lawyers to revoke his deportation order, but it is still likely to be "many months" before he is put on a plane home.

If the Home Secretary also issues a certificate saying any application by Qatada to revoke the deportation order was "clearly unfounded", his lawyers would make an application to the High Court for a judicial review, which could be decided "in a very few weeks".

But if not, Qatada's legal team could appeal against her decision not to revoke the deportation order to Siac and the process, including any further appeals, could still take "many months".

Repeated failed attempts by UK governments over the last 10 years to deport the radical cleric have cost nearly £1 million in legal fees, Government figures show.

No figures have been given for how much Qatada has received in legal aid and some estimates put the cost of keeping Qatada in the UK, either in a high-security jail or closely monitored under strict conditions in the community, along with the legal costs of the fight to deport him, at more than £3 million.

Qatada, who is said to have wide and high-level support among extremists, was convicted in his absence in Jordan of involvement with terror attacks in 1998 and faces a retrial in his home country.

He also featured in hate sermons found on videos in the flat of one of the 11 September bombers.

Since 2001, when fears of the domestic terror threat rose in the aftermath of the attacks, he has challenged, and ultimately thwarted, every attempt by the Government to detain and deport him.

It's your country, your policies and your tax money being spent. Firstly, as the electorate maybe you need to consider, how these prats got into power in the first place! Secondly, stop moaning and do something - even the odd flag waving demonstration outside the court would have been appreciated. But just to whinge....

Surely there can be no genuine reason for this man to still be in this country ?
Like her or not, had Thatcher been the PM at this moment in time, this man would have been airborne to either Jordan or the USA, minutes after the EU ruled his deportation was legal.
We must be the ONLY nation in the world that would tollerate the wholesale abuse of our legal system, our welfare system and the hospitality of our nation. He entered ILLEGALLY in the first place, which in my opinion should exclude him from any of the protections, and benefits that he has been allowed.
We the people of Great Britain, are deserving of politicians that have to guts to stand up for what is RIGHT for the people of this country, and not sit back and allow terrorists and legal scavangers plunder the legal aid and benefits sytem that was put in place to protect the needy of this nation.
Therese May has shown that she is not fit for office and should be removed from post immediately.

Thought Mrs May was going to get him out of the country quickly - many months isn't quickly Teresa and perhaps your family name is more fitting that we supposed.

What makes me laugh is WE the British tax-pays have to fork out the one million quid court costs!

And this plonker is nowt but an illeagal immigrant who's knocked out a load of kids whilst he's been living here off the backs of US stupid British; stupid because OUR idiot government take their orders from the plonkers of the EU!

On the other side of the coin, my son has to pay out a fortune in solicitors bills, to get full custody of his children from an alcholic ex-wife, I've told him to ask the EU for some human rights money; can you see any chance of that?

So he walks in illegally on false documents because he is accused of terrorist attacks in Jordan yet we don't send him back because of our court system. Thank god he wasn't wanted by the USA the UK would be being bombed flat right now because of our dithering judges.

Another grim day for the fools in Wetminster, they certainly do not represent the British people, only their governors in Europe, who dictate what they can do or not. How can they live with the global ridicule and scorn passed upon them. We have become the joke country who nobody really listen to or takes notice of nowadays. And still, it doesn't phase the politicians, who should hang their heads in shame with their total lack of authority, only total embarrassment for the people. It is only our Monarch, the Queen, who offers any pride for the people and country, should it not be for her, then we would be nothing, no thanks to the puppets of Europe in Wetminster....

It is this silly human rights act that should be changed

Look at what the mass immigration into the UK has done, it is destoying this country like a cancer, if the govermnment had listened to the people a few years ago we would have saved the fortune that all this sort of thing is costing the tax payer now, I bet he has never paid a penny into the system

this man along with all other ilegal immigrnats should not get legal aid , legal aid in the uk should be for uk people . why is the world allowed to come here and claim while we have cutbacks costing thousands of people their jobs if the government cannot see this then they should be sacked , and replaced as often as football managers .

They do it because they can and because we have such weak politicians that allow themselves to be ruled by Brussels and by ridiculous human rights legislation.

I can't help but wonder if this [and the previous govt] REALLY want to get rid of this man. Surely there are means to do this .... drop him off at the Jordanian Embassy for one. There is something very odd going on, and as for his greedy lawyers ... my comments wouldn't get posted.
Anyway, whatever happens we will be keeping all his family in gross luxury for life. We are a very weak nation led by very weak people.

Get rid now. And get rid of his scheming money grabbing lawyers as well. And stop the lunacy of funding this thug together witrh his family. He want's the right to a family life? good, then send them packing with him. TODAY!!!!!!!!!!
