Alan Partridge Flies The Nest: Steve Coogan Takes His Creation To Sky

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 18/05/2012 10:53

Sky's ever-increasing grip on British TV comedy has tightened even further with the news that Norfolk's finest, Alan Partridge, will be making his next programmes for its Sky Atlantic channel, and not the BBC.

Steve Coogan's creation will star in two one-hour TV specials for the digital satellite broadcaster. In Welcome To The Places Of My Life, Alan will take viewers on a tour of his home county; while Alan Partridge On Open Books With Martin Bryce will see him being interviewed in front of a book club.

Sky Atlantic will also be adapting Partridge's hugely successful online series, Mid Morning Matters, screen a new animation narrated by Coogan, and a broadcast a two-part series - Steve Coogan's Stand Up Down Under - which is a behind-the-scenes look at his Australian live tour.

"Alan has been off the TV for too long but he is even more excited than me about his chance to have a second bite of the cherry," said Coogan. "Alan feels the second decade of the millennium is the right time."

Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy for Sky, said: "Sky Atlantic is providing our best writer-performers the space to feel creatively free. Who better to kick off our new season of comedies than the phenomenally talented Steve Coogan?"

Well, who indeed? And if you needed any reminder of this phenomenal talent - why, enjoy our round-up of classic Alan Partridge moments below:

This bloke seemed to love his little run on the news channels when he was feeling oh so aggrieved about his treatment by the Murdochs. And if anyone can afford to have the courage of their convictions it's Coogan. Does he really need a fourth home and a couple more Ferraris so badly that he's happy to alienate half his fan base? Yeah, he's a clown all right.

I wouldn't bother too much he just signing his way to the mediocrity of Sky they might have money but no much otherwise at finding original talent or quality

Very sad news in my opinion. I was a fan of Alan Partridge and really enjoyed the series on TV,but I will not be tunning into SKY. Why didn't he choose to go on ITV/C4/C5 instead?? was it because he got greedy with SKY's offer? ADIOS ALAN PARTRIDGE.

I'm guessing that if someone offered you a job somewhere else for lots more money you would refuse it?

When it comes to SKY yes I would.

The BBC is biased, outdated,a state enforced monopoly.and in need of urgent change.

Alan partridge is funny, maybe if the BBC looked after its stars, they would stick around, as it is it seems the BBC is unwilling or unable to compete, of which I suspect is the former, given there huge licence revenue.
08:21 PM on 05/18/2012
I don't think they can win though. If the beeb pay big salaries, then they get slated for wasting public money. If they don't pay, the stars sign deals with nother channel who will pay them more.

Radio announcers are two a penny. I don't care who is behind the mic as long as they just play the music.

Jurassic Park
12:08 PM on 05/19/2012
Not a bad film. But why mention it here? He wasn't in it.
02:50 PM on 05/19/2012
Because in an episode of Alan Partridge he shouts "Jurassic Park!"... AhHa.
11:50 PM on 05/19/2012
Because 'Jurassic Park' was Alan's exclamation after being told by the new Commissioning Editor of the BBC, Chris Feather, that he had been given a new five year contract. (yes I know it's not real life)

I love Partridge, but I'm very disappointed with Coogan. After all his well-publicised criticisms of the Murdoch empire and tabloid culture, he 'crosses over' to Sky. I hate to admit it, but it turns out he's a self-serving hypocrite.

Well put

Yes..u are right...but will be nice to laugh again at whatever he is up to!
