Ben & Jerry's Send Lynne Featherstone Gay Marriage Ice Cream

'Lynne Honeycomb': Ice Cream Makers Lobby MP On Gay Marriage

Lib Dem equalities minister Lynne Featherstone, who is in charge of government plans to introduce gay marriage, has received a special supportive gift from ice cream makers Ben & Jerry's.

In March the company re-named their 'Oh! My! Apple Pie!' flavour 'Apple-y ever after' in support of coalition's proposals to allow same-sex couples to marry.

And in recognition of Featherstone's role in pushing forward the plans, they produced a special 'Lynne Honeycomb' tub for the minister.

A note accompanying the tub read: "Hi Lynne, we've created this special tub to say 'thanks' for supporting equal rights in the UK.

"Ben & Jerry's are all about peace, equal love and delicious ice cream and we think everyone deserves an Apple-y Ever After ending!"

In the wake of poor election results for the Conservatives and Lib Dems in May many right-wing Tory MPs said the government should drop the plans to allow gay people to marry.

And gay rights campaigners were disappointed to see no mention of plans to bring in legislation during the Queen's Speech.

However Featherstone has insisted that there will be "no u-turn on equal marriage" and that the government is committed to legislate by 2015.

Ben & Jerry's campaign follows a similar move in America where they renamed flavour 'Chubby Hubby' to 'Hubby Hubby' to celebrate gay marriage being legalised in Vermont in 2009.
