Blade Runner Sequel: Sir Ridley Scott Reveals Female Protagonist, And Reunion With Original Writer Hampton Francher

The Huffington Post UK/WENN  |  By Posted: Updated: 18/05/2012 09:12

Director Sir Ridley Scott is teaming up again with the first films' writer Hampton Fancher for a sequel to his sci-fi classic Blade Runner.

The duo is reuniting to make a follow-up which will be set "some years after the first film concluded," according to a press release.

The statement went on to explain that Scott and Fancher had planned the initial film to be a trilogy, similar to the Star Wars franchise.

Bosses at production company Alcon Entertainment insist: "It is a perfect opportunity to reunite Ridley with Hampton on this new project, one in fact inspired by their own personal collaboration, a classic of cinema if there ever was one."

Fancher adapted the Philip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? to make the 1982 cult hit starring Harrison Ford as an expert on artificial humans.

And the director has let slip another factoid about the forthcoming sequel - that it will be a female-centric film.

Sir Ridley told the Daily Beast during promotion for his forthcoming Prometheus that, "We have a very good take on it. And we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

Should be good. It's unlikely to be another Phantom Menace, Ridley Scott has a great track record, and will have learned from George Lucas' mistakes.

And just above the comment panel here, an ad for "Men in Black 3".

Pop will eat itself. Hollywood gets more cynical in its pursuit of a ready made audience every day.

How long will it be before they make "Telletubbies 1"?

The demographic is probably just about right isn't it?

I will agree that Scott rarely disappoints @beenzrgud but some films should just be left alone - they stand on their own - I could maybe go for a pre - bladerunner (as Star Wars did) - but would prefer as many of the originals as possible (which makes it impossible). I am sure I will queue to watch it but for me there was only 1 bladerunner - hope I am wrong ;-)
PS - Scott has a nose for a cash cow - this will be milked dry.

Well said. I love Bladerunner! And I loved the original Star Wars trilogy! And we know what happened after that...CGI orgied 'fakequels' as Lechiffre rightly put it, peppered with some plastic acting.

I regularly pass through the power stations that inspired Ridley for the films art direction. I just hope he knows what he's doing and focuses on casting & chemistry like with the original, and not end up with a diluted by-product like with Lucas did.

The Vangelis score was amazing too.
