Santander Downgrade: Moody's Credit Agency Reduces Rating Of 16 Spanish Banks, Including UK Arm

PA/Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: Updated: 18/05/2012 10:41

The financial turmoil on the continent gathered pace on Friday after a key agency downgraded the credit rating of 16 Spanish banks, including the debt rating of Santander UK, a subsidiary of Banco Santander.

European markets suffered further losses after Moody's Investor Service downgraded the Spanish lenders.

The agency said the downgrade was due to financial challenges facing the Spanish economy, concerns over the Spanish government’s ability to prop up the bank, as well as exposure to bad debt from the country’s ailing property sector.

Following news of the downgrade, Santander UK moved to reassure its customers citing the fact that it was a "completely autonomous" subsidiary from its parent firm.

A spokesman for the UK bank, said: "money raised in the UK stays in the UK", adding that there would be no impact on its business.

The downgrade of the Spanish banks comes amid ongoing concerns in the eurozone, with Spain likely to be dragged further into the maelstrom should the crisis in Greece fail to stabilise.

As Spain's woes deepened, investors continued to be troubled by political turmoil in Athens, where a caretaker government has stepped in to steer the debt-ridden country into repeat elections next month.

Jordan Lambert, trader at Spreadex, said the "environment is getting increasingly bleak" with Moody's downgrade of the Spanish banks adding to the "sour taste".

The FTSE 100 Index lost nearly 1%, while France's Cac-40 fell 1% and the Dax in Germany lost 0.5%. Spain's Ibex-35, however, rose 0.5%.

On Friday, David Cameron is scheduled to meet new French president Francois Hollande as they join world leaders in the US for a G8 summit, which is likely to be dominated by the eurozone crisis.

when it comes to the inflated salaries paid to the upper management of banks, we hear that same excuse......"we have to attract the best people..." well the "best" people have shown what a mess they can make whilst putting greed first, so let us see what the not so best people can do at a realistic salary, and while we are at it apply the same principle to the disgraceful amount paid to the a.cos and above grades in the n.h.s.
01:13 PM on 05/19/2012
LetS face it what caused all this mess was greedy banks using property as a cash generator for their bonus culture, forcing the working class to pay more and more of their hard earned salaries just to service their mortgage.most of the property was only worth a fraction of what was being paid but as long as people paid the prices the banks got their profits and bonuses.
Now we have hit the top of the cycle and the banks with the government are doing everything to keep the prices up there to say their profits.
I'm afraid Britain has a realignment of property prices to come just like all the other countries that indulged in this pyramid scheme using house prices.

Honestly-some of the comments -JRWaddy who wrote ''£50 in £1 coins'' - ''While I registered my dissatisfaction'' They took the coins did they not ? -so why unhappy.
Your talking about people here-one of us ...polite helpful human beings-they don't have Santander- made in Spain printed on their boots.
Speak as you find- From my experience they are brilliant a -HSBO cash machine that failed to pay out £50 ..no problem credited my account..happened twice. Hotel charges in San Paulo
£75 x 2 They asked me if I had visited Brazil - refunded the fraudulent charges. Visa payment to Debenhams £280 Swivel chair -wanted to cancel when i found identical chair on eBay £90.
Debs said can only cancel within 30 minutes of ordering -and Item must be delivered. Santander promised a reversal if could not agree cancellation. Debs. backed down when i told them.
Have £35K deposit -it stays at Santander. Idiots that panic cause problems-We all have our Government's Guarantee £85K . There is no problem at all.
By the way politicians are also human- exceptional people rather like books- it means someone approved them -often many- before they were placed on the shelves- benches.

What surprises me is the similarity to the downgrading of Italian debt sometime ago. Both these events happened afteer action had been taken by the respective governments to improve the situation
Are Credit Agencies supposed to be reactive or proactive? Or is this just another power play by the financial markets?

Secondly if the governments of ALL countries within the Euro zone want the currency to survive then they should put forward a policy to which they can adhere

Part of the currency wars I'm afraid. These agencies are the tools of the US governemnt, they were the ones that gave triple A ratings to junk and caused the crisis in the first place. In the UK we should be backing the Euro and the Europeans. All the others are our enemies.
11:14 AM on 05/19/2012
Although I am strongly against the way in which the EU has developed on our own we could be swallowed up and fail

Swapping to the NAFTA might be an alternative but would they reject us

I don't like failure, therefore am looking for the leadership that will restore competitiveness to the zone with Britain having a proper voice

But boy it's a marathon not a sprint Is

Global Finance has rated Santander the worlds 10th safest bank, it has a very healthy balance sheet....
01:33 AM on 05/19/2012
Who is global finance, is that Mr or an organisation or are we talking the same ratings agencies who rated CDO's as "A" grade that started the financial melt down?

Try this one , good advice from a 12 year old .

If your that worried about Santander UK you should be just as worried about the UK's ever bungling LLoyd's as its current exposure to the Euro banking crisis is terrible.

Was a revealing programme, it showed how Greece lied and cheated to get in to the Euro zone, and how Germany and France bent the rules so Greece could be admitted. You reap what you sow.

There are no experts in these things, economics is an art form not a science, it is ongoing, like the weather. Nobody knows how it will unfold. Personally, I think some mathematical whizz kid could just solve the whole mess overnight. it's only numbers, numbers balence each other out. All debt is owed to someone. Just cancel the lot and start again, this time with a world currency.
09:14 AM on 05/19/2012
With you there ... If it was your personal debt you would be declared bankcrupt. Good idea wipe out all the debt and start again and learn a very painful lesson " No more uncontrolled debt, stupidity and greed " I don't know about you but I'm chessed off with it all ?
