Champions League Final: Chelsea Fans To Line West London Streets To Celebrate Win

Huffington Post UK/PA  |  Posted: Updated: 20/05/2012 09:02

Tens of thousands of Chelsea fans will line the streets of west London today to celebrate the club's historic Champions League and FA Cup double.

Hoards of jubilant supports are expected to salute their heroes during a victory open top bus parade less than 24 hours after the Blues' dramatic Champions League penalty triumph in Munich.

The rolling procession will kick-off from Stamford Bridge at 4pm with rookie manager Roberto Di Matteo, captain John Terry and the rest of the double-winning Chelsea team set to display their newly-won silverware.

The Blues were crowned European club champions for the first time in their history after a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Germany last night.

They overcame Bayern Munich in their home stadium after the match went to extra time.

Around 25,000 Chelsea fans packed behind one of the goals in the Allianz Arena, while many more crammed into bars in London and around the UK to follow the action live on TV.

Even Prime Minister David Cameron managed to catch the nail-biting shoot-out, watching the drama unfold alongside German chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders at the G8 summit at Camp David.

Didier Drogba was Chelsea's hero, scoring the equalising goal in the dying minutes of normal time and netting the spot kick to win the shootout 4-3.

It followed his match-winning goal which saw the west Londoners overcome Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley earlier this month.

Drogba was nearly the villain last night when he conceded a penalty in the first half of extra time, but Dutchman Arjen Robben's shot was saved by Chelsea's other hero on the night, goalkeeper Petr Cech.

At 34, Drogba is said to be leaving Stamford Bridge, so his winning goal could well be his last kick for the club.

But the Ivorian star will certainly be immortalised as a Chelsea legend by the fans.

He said of his team-mates on ITV: "They never give up until the end. This team is amazing.

"It was written, I think, a long time ago.

"I want to dedicate this cup to all the managers we've had before, all the players I've played with before."

Roman Abramovich, the club's owner, joined in the celebrations from the stands.

The team's last victory parade saw around 70,000 excited fans flocked to the streets to celebrate the clubs 2010 Premier League and FA Cup double.

Today's bus celebration will follow the same route, travelling along streets including Fulham Road and King's Road before ending in Parsons Green.

Local roads will be restricted and some closed to traffic from early this morning until the crowds disperse, London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham said.

Councillor Nick Botterill, H&F Council Deputy Leader, said: "Chelsea's historic Champions League and FA Cup double is a monumental achievement that will never be forgotten in these parts.

"Like a phoenix from the flames Roberto Di Matteo turned around what could have been a disappointing year for the Blues to deliver the top prize in world club football to west London.

"This will forever be remembered as the year the Blues achieved their European destiny!"

Congrats to Chelsea for beating the odds both in the final and semi final. It does seem strange though that a team that has had a billion pounds spent on it in less than 10 years was the underdog.

Pleased for Drogba, but its a joke, Chelski 2nd best on the night and 6th in the league ..... Best in Europe ........ I dont think so!!!!

Not a Chelsea fan then ?
07:09 AM on 05/21/2012
No just a football fan, just goes to prove a point I made years ago (Porto) any team can win it, its just a cup competition (difficult one maybe) but a cup competition all the same and on any given day any team can win but sorry but there is no way Chelski are the best in europe!! I know they got knocked out in the semi's (which further proves my point) but give me Barca or Real any day for the way they play their football.

Good to see the mould broken, another team win the title,
similar to up here in Scotland, with Hearts.

Come to my place and watch the Match said's Obama, and don't forget your Eight - Pack's.

Hi - De - Hi, so this is the REAL best they can come up with at The Leaders Holiday - Camp David, for while they ALL Fiddle around the TV Screen, in the REAL World Greece Burn's over the coming Week's while they no less all watch the Olympic's.

There is something very similar about World Politics, and Sporting Events, and that is you should be always running to keep up, and NOT shouting, or cheering from the Side - Lines.
05:05 PM on 05/20/2012
You know that world leaders are people too and they can't be expected to work 24 hours a day. They had their meeting earlier, productive or unproductive as they were, and they made the choice to unwind by watching the Champions League final afterwards. As much as I may disagree with the policies of many of them or question their political competence, I certainty don't expect them not to be able to have a good time every once in a while and unwind from the work day like the rest of us. The CL final is one of those events that the world watches and it would be bizarre to expect the world's leaders not to do the same.

World leaders? Misleaders more like.

I don't know about how many hours those Part - Time World Leaders commit to doing an on the Jobsworth stitch of REAL work, but you would have to admit, they through having now many, many Meetings, they combined have not produced so far any kinds of solutions to the World Economics Crisis, and getting together just to watch a Football Match will NOT advance the REAL reason that they are at Holiday Camp - David for, paid for at the expense of Tax - Payers.

They therefore, remain completely unproductive all the way.

Dave looks happy, Angela looks like she needs the rules explained to her, Obama's thinking "I need to make non-committal noises here" and Hollande's going "Bah, these Englishmen and their success, how I hate them...I will tax my people even more now!"

Just about neck and neck in the popularity stakes. Our best bet would be David Davis or Boris....at least you know where you stand with them.

I feel sorry for you, you won the last war but look where you are economically compared to us ? You have given your whole car industry to Germany. We own your railways and many more companies in Britain. Your national football team with the golden generation sucks big time. And last not least you have Cameron and we have Merkel. I guess if Merkel would run in Britain she would win against Cameron easily. LOL

I salute Roman Abramovich for choosing to live in London rather than Munich! This mans great wealth at least is benefitting the United Kingdom in many untold ways. He should be given an hononary Knighthood immediately or they should change the law to allow titles to foreign individuals.

Why would you want to knight a non domicile tax avoider @seymour? His UK tax bill is probably less than yours - just because he lives here doesnt mean he contributes - he doesnt. If he and his ilk (including other luvvys like Richard Branson and half the premiership footballers) didnt "hide" their wealth in offshore trust funds the exchequer would be about £5bn a year better off so think about all these heroes - they are laughing while we are paying.

I do know that, but Chelsea would not have lifted the cup without him...that's my point ...I suspect the Germans don't allow such arrangements.

It was truly a great match, and a great end of season for Chelsea. Roman will be mad not to give Roberto a contract and Drogba should stay as he has really earned another two years.

Cameron may well have prejudged Terry's case and there have been precedents for the dropping of charges over Ministerial interventions like this. No doubt Terry's lawyers will be working hard on this over the next few days.
