Euro Crisis: Nick Clegg Warns Eurozone Turmoil Could Lead To Rise In Extremism And Xenophobia

Nick Clegg has warned that the continued eurozone crisis could lead to a rise in political extremism and xenophobia in Europe.

In an interview with Der Spiegel ahead of a visit to Berlin this week, the Liberal Democrat leader hit out at a lack of leadership on the eurozone crisis, cautioning that there could be an increase in extremism unless it was addressed.

He said: "This cannot carry on, because the combination of economic insecurity and political paralysis, we know this from the history of our continent, is the ideal recipe for an increase in extremism and xenophobia."

The deputy prime minister added that arguments in the UK over whether the Britain should join the eurozone would be "like a small side show compared to the rise of political extremism" in the coming years.

It is a stark assessment from Clegg, who has been a long-term advocate of the European project.

"I, as a passionate Liberal and pro-European, think it would be a disaster if a lack of grip and a lack of a comprehensive solution were to lead to a push towards the extreme Right or the extreme Left," Clegg said.

He added: "If the eurozone does not come up with a comprehensive vision of its own future pretty soon - in three, four, five years time - we will have a whole range of nationalistic, extremist, xenophobic and populist movements increasing across Europe."

In October last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave a similarly bleak assessment, warning that if the "euro fails, Europe fails".

In the interview, Clegg warned that Germany must do more than merely insist on austerity if the eurozone was to stabilise. He also admitted that the coalition may have been too "dogmatic" in its rhetoric on cutting spending.

"You have to have something which creates a fiscal accompaniment to monetary union," he said.

"Whilst I have a huge amount of sympathy with German taxpayers and German politicians who are reluctant, understandably because Germany is the paymaster of the European Union, to entertain these ideas, I fear that they are unavoidable.

"It is not sustainable to believe that the eurozone can thrive through fiscal discipline alone - it also has to, at some level, include an ability to either share debt or to deal with shocks in one part of the system or the other through fiscal transfers."

Clegg denied that the coalition parties were "austerity fanatics".

"Maybe our rhetoric has been too dogmatic in the early stages because we needed to persuade people it was necessary," he said.

Clegg insisted people should look at what the government had "actually done".

"Last autumn when I was told, when David Cameron was told, when George Osborne was told that the predictions of growth and the public finances in Britain were worse than we'd anticipated what we could have done was to cut more to meet our initial target in dealing with the structural deficit by the end of this parliament," he said.

I am an outsider. An independent not affiliated with any political party.
Some perspective, that I call ‘country philosophy’ from the ‘outsider’.

It seemed that Europe was in better shape when each country had its own identity

When each country was sovereign with it’s culture, language and currency.

Greece had the Drachma, Italy the Lira, Spain the Peseta, France the Franc, Germany the Deutsche Mark and of course the study British Pound.

Why would the people of Europe give up on their own individual identity?
Who forced the Euro on the European people?
What was the purpose?

what is interesting are the responses from the Pro Europe anti British liberals on here. so many are either abusing any one with a different view, spreading misleading or false information or to be true just telling lies. This is of course the way liberals operate, they claim the moral high ground, but in reality they are just stood on a huge pile of their own sh**e.
if you try to discuss a point with them, respond to their abuse they either block any response or just get more abusive and ignore the facts.
still they are happy and thank God it appears that UKIP are now fast replacing them . so may be the country can be saved.

...to be pro Europe doesn't make anyone anti-British...and happy to be identified as a liberal (although not a LibDem) - thanks for the compliment from a very unexpected source...

The sooner this ignorant and stupid man is voted out the better. He is simply trying to safeguard his EU pension at our expense. He lost the argument when he broke his election promises.

If he had any decency at all, he would resign.

Extremists exist here already, sure it has taken more than ten years to have him extradited but as of yet still on social.

Extremism only exists because the Government allowed, only "certain" Extremists?.

This Government has a majority so when the two coaliltion trotters return, they should get their fingers out & stop the known extremists.

UKIP's Nigel Farage has already raised the concern of extremist political groups getting a hearing . it is the political stance that you take Mr Clegg that fuels it .

more likely to be leftist extremism like the riots last summer when the EDL had to police the streets!
10:58 PM on 05/21/2012
Ahh, yes. where the media reported the muslim groups patroling the streets as great citizens and the white people doing the same thing as racists. The problem is that people are not as stupid as the media thinks and can see through the multicultural lie.

Thanks for the advice Cleggy and lets hope you're correct - for a change and not lying through your back teeth?

Europe, soup kitchens, rubbish bins dredged, long days spent walking the street to join a queue in hope of food, nothing to eat in twenty-four hours no job no home no life. For Greece a people defeated by Eurocrats let down buy their own politicians, Greece a place where the wealthy failed to play their part, starving not just a nation but also its people now they run with pockets full thinking only of themselves.

The stone has been thrown into the pond and the ripples drift across its surface soon there will be nowhere to hide, their shame at how they leave their homeland washes of their shoulders. Destitute the people homeless sleep where they drop hungry they scavenge, what little they have left by their side hope they have none.

A body swings in the breezes rope knotted secured to a branch unforgivingly, not the first not the last, live in Greece the price of Europe. Soon the street will burn revenge turning the road gullies red and the people will fight, the politicians have fiddled long enough.

European leaders have little idea most have never lived the life of a genuine worker, not for them the grime of labour. Their reality check will be written in blood, like addicts the people will hit rock bottom then fight back, no amount of wealth will save them. When you have lost everything then you have nothing to lose survival becomes your driver Greece is knocking on the door.

Well i do hope the bankers are alright and they don't have to suffer any inconvenience. with no public sector and no one to consume the over production of the private sector , who will clear away the bodies.

I am sure it will still be the fault of those poor who stretched themselves , while our bankers and corporate executives followed restraint and austerity, if only that were true.

The fear for all of use is revolution, with revolution comes cleansing and that cleansing means death and destruction, hysteria of revolution means the collection of old family on family history and people misunderstandings. In Greece the danger is the military will take control with violence and the people are too weak to resist them.

The blind stupidity of the EU and the money grabbing people is that they will send not only Greece down this path of no choice, but many other Mediterranean countries. Come the summer when the weather is hot peoples residence and tolerance will be low the danger then will be a snap reaction, which is always violent

The EU leaders are not leaders of people but orchestrators of wealth grabbing and the demolition of national freedom from sovereign countries, they have become so self-centred they cannot see their own stupidity.

To end this debt debacle first they must return all Greece debt to that amount that was borrowed, wiping out the obscene interest rates (a new law making it illegal to charge above a set rate should be introduced) giving Greece a chance to repay their loan.

The world governments must take control of the financial markets; modern technology giving instant news takes away the cooling down period available when all news travelled at snail pace in line with the transport of its time. A rush on banks businesses and countries was almost impossible once, now it’s just a flick of a switch.
