Olympic Torch Dies For First Time Due To 'Malfunctioning Burner'

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 21/05/2012 12:58

There was brief embarrassment for Olympic organisers on Monday when the Torch went out.

The blip in proceedings happened while the Torch was attached to the side of bearer David Follett’s wheelchair in Great Torrington, Devon.

A London 2012 spokesperson told the Huffington Post UK that it was out only for a very short time and that a malfunctioning burner was to blame.

She said: “The Flame went out due to a malfunctioning burner. It is not uncommon for a Flame to go out and this can happen for a number of reasons, for example, in extreme winds.

“We keep the Mother Flame in specially designed miners lanterns so if the flame does go out for some reason on the Relay we relight it from the source of the flame.”

Monday is day three of the relay with 113 torchbearers carrying the Olympic Flame 135.30 miles through 23 communities between Exeter and Taunton.

It will end with an evening celebration at Somerset Cricket Ground.

During the day the Flame will pass a number of iconic landmarks including the Taw Bridge and Dunster Castle.

Today’s Torchbearers include Triple Jump World record holder Jonathan Edwards, who will carry the Flame in Ilfracombe and cricketer Marcus Trescothick, who will carry the Flame in Taunton.

At the evening celebration a cauldron will be lit to mark the culmination of the day’s festivities. The Flame will then be transferred to a lantern and it will stay in Taunton overnight.

hope this bloody torch dies before it gets to Lochwinnoch on the 8th.The whole village is being closed down for hours for this thing to pass through, which will take all of 15 minutes. No deliveries to shops, post office...mail or parcels.if you are disabled you can't get in or out of the village for hospital appointments etc.A complete and utter waste of time and money

Refreshing to see comments that are not racist. I am surprised nobody has blamed immigration for the flame going out!

Wrong. It went out at the opening ceremony in Greece.
All a load of rubbish to satisfy but a few with our money.
Just an advertising campaign.

How appropriate that the Olympic flame went out. For me it died a long time ago to be replaced by sponsors, money, prestige, trying to impress the rest of the world with our organisational skills. This is the McDonalds, Proctor & Gamble big business Olympics. You only have to look at the entourage of sponsors following the cheap and tawdry looking torch to know that.

I feel exactly the same way. I was really happy that Britain got the Olympics. Then I was unhappy that London got it because they get just about everything. Then when it went corporate it took all the prestige and sense of fair play out of it for me. All our hard working athletes are being used as vast, money making commodities. I am so disappointed.

Maybe they could dip Lordy-Lordy Coe in tar - he could then be lit up for the tour around UK?

If only the main event could have the same outcome we could all save a fortune. For proof just take a look at the Greek Olympic site and its condition.
