Vince Cable Slams Labour Reforms Ahead Of Adrian Beecroft's Report

PA/The Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: Updated: 21/05/2012 13:35

Business Secretary Vince Cable has dismissed proposals to cut employment rights and make it easier to sack people as "complete nonsense".

Attacking rival MPs who openly support the reforms, Mr Cable said he was opposed to the "ideological zealots who want to encourage British firms to fire at will".

His outburst, which will increase tension within the Coalition, comes as venture capitalist and Conservative donor Adrian Beecroft readies his study into reforming employment law in the UK.

Writing in The Sun, Mr Cable said: "Some people think that if labour rights were stripped down to the most basic minimum, employers would start hiring and the economy would soar again.

"This is complete nonsense."

He added: "British workers are an asset, not just a cost for company bosses. That is why I am opposed to the ideological zealots who want to encourage British firms to fire at will."

Beecroft's study, which was commissioned by prime minister David Cameron, is expected to call for firms to be given more flexibility to make redundancies, and an easing of equality rules to boost job creation.

It is expected to include measures to cap payouts for unfair dismissal, cutting redundancy notice periods from three months to one month, and five days in case of severe emergency, and removal of certain parts of the Equality Act relating to third party responsibility for harassment.

The prime minister has said he is committed to helping businesses employ people and grow, but is not "wedded to one set of proposals or another".

Downing Street said on Monday that: "The Prime Minister has said we should look at all the options to make it easier for people to be employed and for businesses to grow and for people to start up businesses.

"The proposals in the Beecroft Report were part of that and it is clearly a contribution.

"The Government's position on employment law is that it needs to support business, encourage growth and ensure that employment rights of workers are not weakened."

Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna called for Mr Cable to come before the Commons to clarify the government's position ahead of Beecroft's report.

It is thought unlikely that Mr Cable will be able to respond to the question in person, as he is visiting the North East. A Business Department spokesman was not immediately able to say which minister would attend the Commons in his place.

Did anyone see tonights "Newsnight Programme'..When Dominic' Right Whinger'Raab' struggled to come up with credible evidence that a more relaxed labour law policy would create more jobs'..he quoted from a poll rather than actual proof...The fact is apart from the USA and Canada'..the UK have less restrictions than any of our economic rivals'..Even Germany (Though Very Efficient) have more rights for their workers and yet that hasn't been a barrier to competetiveness or growth...In fact'..Mr Raab' wasn't even sure that CaMoron' would sanction such a policy'..Lord Oakeshott' and Danny Blanchflower' also said that there was no evidence that such extreme measures would help the economy...They were actually saying it could make Employer/Employee's relationship much worse.Rather they said' that the problem was that the banks will not lend to struggling firms that was cauing the problems.

Vince, in the light of Hunt's shennanigans and now unfair employment proposals would salvage what little is left of his reputation if he now resigns.

More chicanery from the Lib Dems

Yet more Janus posturing by Vince Cable will convince no one, fortunately Chuka Umunna set out starkly yet another unfair policy by this discredited, shambolic government.

Don't the Tories ever learn straight on the tails of Murdoch we see the same thing happening all over again recomendations being rushed through from "Conservative donor Adrian Beecroft"...in other words If you want something passed first dine with Dave and leave the Tory party a bung and then just write out your wish list and they will pass it in return.

Seems it stuck with some Tory representatives aka MP's, when it comes to treating people.

I wonder how Adrian Beechcroft is being paid by the coalition , to strip all UK workers of their empoyment rights. ?
I wonder, if the Same Beechcroft , capitlises the major British companies that deligate their maufacturing to countries such as China , Korea, and Taiwan., to avoid employing UK labour, and purely to increase profit.
It is little wonder The 2 C`s `employment ` plans` if they can be called that, failed miserably, amidst the highest unemployment for many tears.
I wonder if the business secretary , would care to name all these companies and their owner /directors , publlicly, in Parliament, to establish how many of them, like Beechcroft himself, are Tory donors.

I dont really know why Vince or most of the Lib/dems are continueing in this sordid coalition. They have supported some of the most right wing ideological laws/legislation passed, yet the lib/dems have had the occassional bit of left over which has been thrown from the head table.
My mind tells me that longer they carry on supporting the fascist outfit, more damage they will do to themseleves. Just come out and say sorry and they made a biggest mistake in thier history, take the hit from the voters and re-build again.

Because if the coalition falls, there will be an election and the Liberals will be wiped off the political map for a very long time! The leaders of the Liberals are desperate to be in power and have sold their ideals, party and followers down the line for this!!! They are going to make sure they have their full 15 mins of fame or imfamy!

I shout at you, you shout at me; I write something about you, you write something about me; I say something on TV about you, you say something on TV about me, and we both get our headlines and column inches as the country slips yet another few feet deeper in the muck.......No wonder no one trusts any political party or politician and no one bothers to vote anymore......
