Fake Chinese Electronics Found In US Military Aircraft

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: Updated: 22/05/2012 10:15

Almost one million fake electronic parts from China have been found in US military aircraft.

A report by the US Senate Armed Services committee found 1,800 individual cases of counterfeit electronic parts being used in military hardware.

They included thermal weapons sights, mission computers used in high altitude defence missiles, aircraft and helicopters.

SH-60B helicopters and P-8A Poseidon planes were some of those in which fake parts were used.

More than 70% of the parts were eventually traced to China, after passing through a "complex supply chain", often involving multiple vendors.

But after China, the UK was the next largest source for fake electronics followed by Canada, according to the report.

"The committee identified instances in which both countries served as resale points for suspect counterfeit electronic parts," it said.

According to one witness quoted in the report, factories of up to 15,000 people have been set up "for the purpose of counterfeiting".

Failure of any one of these parts could put national security at risk, the report said.

The committee said that the suspect parts put the armed forces "at risk" and called for "aggressive inspection and testing practices" to stamp out the use of counterfeit parts.

"Rather than acknowledging the problem and moving aggressively to shut down counterfeiters, the Chinese government has tried to avoid scrutiny," the report said, while calling for China to clamp down on people openly selling fake electronics.

Who cares its cheap right? Its high time we clamped down on our companies who send all this work abroad for higher profits. The profit comes from stripping away the hard won rights of your average western worker and exploiting some poor Chinese worker by not providing those same rights. These companies don't care at all about what right. We should only consume what has been produced by workers with their full measure of rights.

Oh, good!! Since they clearly have access to the vast majority of our technology, at least this particular uprising against the evils of western culture will skip all those weird little moments where we think we can win.

Hey, I've got a great idea!!! Why not have the parts to American Military Aircraft produced in American factories on American soil by American workers!!!! They would have the most to gain by producing perfect parts!!!! They would also have jobs, be paying taxes which in turn would go toward paying our enormous Republican sponsored debt! I actually think this is more of a plan than any GOPer has put forth. I think the parts would probably cost less because I sell on eBay and I can't imagine what the S&H is on shipping those parts around the world twice before they arrive. It just cost me 22.00 to ship under 5 lbs to Fla. Seriously. Isn't what I just commented common sense?

UN-FREAKING-REAL. THIS is EXACTLY WHY we need American Manufacturing HOME.

The rapacious greed of the top 1% Banksters will never be satisfied - and they don't care if they put American security at risk. They just need PROFIT.

End NAFTA, CAFTA and GATT.

manyfaces, I'll tell you why. We would care what happened to our Military men and women more than any other country would, because our military is made up of our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers AND our children, you half wit. Plus the American worker built this country and at one time everything in it. Because the old beautiful cars that are still running in Cuba in spite of their age, were built in America. When American men went off to WW11, American women took their places in the factories and built exquisite product until they returned. In spite of the propaganda spread by the manufacturers who left this country for the FREEDOM to hire slave labor, the problems with American products including the car fiasco were caused by the stupid decisions of the CEO's and manufacturer's decisions not by the workers who built them. Grow up and find out about the beginnings of this great country. It was built by the American workers you were so quick to question. The wealth of the people who have left us was earned for them by the sweat and blood of the American worker. Their huge fortunes were accumulated in spite of the UNIONS they blame for everything. What were you thinking when you questioned the ability of your own countrymen?

No, product for the U S military should ever be made in a foreign country, never. These parts bought, if by a procurer, in the Pentagon, then that individual should be arrested for treason. Period.

This is what happens when you source the "Lowest bidder" and he outsources the contracts to the lowest labor costs.

When will people learn that profits first mentality is no patriotic. Neither is outsourcing.

That will be ultra convenient for China when we're at war and they is able to push their remote kill switch and watch our 5 billion dollar-a-piece jets fall out of the sky!

Cheaply made electronics made in China are often BETTER than the stuff we are told, (Apple), is not "fake", (Apple), and forced to buy. A lot of the superior and cheaper stuff just is not sold in Canada. I bought an MP3 player from China that was way better than my Ipod I had before and about a tenth the price. So by this definition of "fake" is 90% of the stuff you can buy at Walmart "fake?"

FAke in this case pertains to non spec, or non compliant parts.
15:48 on 23/05/2012
There is a big difference between 'fake' or knock-off' electronics --which I think you really meant ot say-- for consumer use and defective electronics used in military weapon systems. 'Knock-off' electronics in consumer goods by the the Chinese is a violation of international patent agreements, which the Chinese blatantly ignore They also do not directly impact national defense. Fake or defective electronics in military equipment do. The problem lies in the globalization of technology which means that is very hard to trace what parts come from what country. However, the US military bureaucracy had this responsibility and was not careful in procurement. Herein lies the problem. As I write this comment, have no doubt that Obama himself is making 'heads roll', particularly in an election year. He is cool and level headed, and a student of Machiavelli (although he would deny it as true followers of Machiavelli automatically do.)

Also, should it be a no surprise that they are defective. The Chinese government is still in control of their industry and this was a conscious effort, although they will deny it. They have only their self interest in mind and helping our military is not in their interest. T

This what happens when the government tries to cut costs and/or award contracts to the lowest bid. They are always penny smart buy dollar foolish.

You get what you pay for (unless you're being scammed).

They were counterfeits. They probably paid the price they thought they were paying for authentic parts.

Actually, its not that simple. In fact its very difficult to trace the country of origin for electronic parts as they go through the hands of many vendors who don't keep good records of where the components were obtained (the scam).

In my comment I was lamenting that our government is leaving themselves open for this sort of thing by buying on the cheap.

Where I work, our purchasing agent is always on the lookout to buy quality parts and avoid parts made in China. The Chinese have inferior quality standards. We don't like having to repair our equipment we manufacture.

The story isn't exactly clear on what it means by "fake". Are they not performing to spec (quality issue), or are they just not from who they supposedly were from (security issue)?

We wish it was that simple. Fake parts tend to break down sooner and in wild ways. I found out that the hard way privately. A new fake power supply for a Toshiba laptop killed the laptop six weeks later. Sometimes they shear apart at an inopportune moment while under stress. Sometimes they are superior to the original.
