A baby suffocated in a childminder's bed after he was put down for an afternoon nap, a court heard.

Two month-old Levi Haggard died after being laid down on his stomach and surrounded by pillows.

The tragedy happened while in the care of Cherie Kohenskey, 39, of Troy, Missouri, US, who was illegally childminding 10 children at the time.

She pleaded guilty to first-degree child endangerment, and after initially being charged with involuntary manslaughter, was given a suspended four-year sentence, five years probation, 100 community service hours and ordered not to be around children under three years of age without supervision and ordered not to babysit.

Levi's mum, Jody, said she had previously caught Kohenskey putting her child to sleep in a bed and had asked her not to do it again. After the verdict, she told reporters:

"What's a mother going to say? Nothing's ever going to be good enough because he's never coming back."
