The first pictures of Outkast star Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix have been leaked from the set of rock biopic All Is By My Side.

The John Ridley film will focus on the period the guitarist recorded his 1967 album Are You Experienced? a work that is widely considered one of the greatest rock albums ever made.

It will trace his beginnings after he was discovered in a New York club, to his eventual meeting with Chas Chandler, who launched his career.

Several previous biopics have been abandoned, including a proposal by Paul Greengrass, which was shelved after Hendrix’s estate refused to license the late musician’s songs, the Guardian reported.

It is unknown if it has agreed to back this project, after a May 10 statement on its website read: “Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production.

"Experience Hendrix, L.L.C., the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation."
