Ledley King has been released by Tottenham Hotspur after 13 years in the club's first team.
King, 31, has struggled with knee injuries over the last six years of his career, curtailing the progress of one of Europe's most naturally gifted defenders.
He told the club website: "I had a really good start to last season and was pleased to play as many games as I did. A knock in training set me back towards the end, but I opted to carry on playing rather than take the time out to have the knee seen to. Unfortunately that meant that I didn’t play the last few games at the standard I would have liked.
"I’ve been discussing things with the Club and my contract expires this summer. The Club has been fantastic in supporting me and given me several options to stay involved with Tottenham. I shall take a view with them pre-season on my future.
"Tottenham has been the only Club for me and if I can’t play here then I shall look to be involved in another capacity."
He was restricted to just 323 appearances with the White Hart Lane club, and scored 14 goals, winning one trophy in 2008 when he captained the Lilywhites to League Cup victory over Chelsea.
Capped 21 times by England, he scored twice for the Three Lions against Portugal and Mexico six years apart.
Spurs fans will likely continue to chant "Oh Ledley Ledley, he's only got one knee, but he's better than John Terry" in tribute to their former captain.
