Brian Charles Lara, on the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1994, carved his own piece of history in the cricketing fraternity at Edgbaston by hitting 501 for Warwickshire against Durham.
It remains the highest total scored by a batsman in first-class cricket and is the only quintuple hundred recorded in first-class cricket history.
He amassed the haul at a phenomenal run rate. In 474 minutes, he scored his 501 from only 427 balls, hitting 308 in boundaries (10 sixes and 62 fours).
Having arrived at the crease at 15:28pm on Friday 3 June with Warwickshire 8-1, at the close of play Lara was 111 not out.
Play was suspended on Saturday due to rain while none was scheduled for Sunday, so the Trinidad and Tobagan had to wait three days to complete his record. He didn't disappoint.
