Back To The Future: Doc Brown And Marty McFly Hoax Hits Twitter

Not the real thing: The doctored image... yet plenty were fooled

Twitter users have been hoodwinked by a Photoshopped picture which purported to show the date Back To The Future characters Doc Brown and Marty McFly are set to go forward in time to.

The doctored image of the time-travelling DeLorean’s dashboard, showing yesterday’s date, was posted to Twitter and quickly went viral:

But the actual date chosen by Doc (Christopher Lloyd) was October 21, 2015.

The fake screengrab was created by Steve Berry, social media manager for mobile checkout company Simply Tap, as a means to publicise the Back To The Future trilogy Blu-ray box.

He told Mashable it was “just an accident” , believing viewers would recall a similar hoax two years ago by Total Film (as Buzzfeed notes, it's a persistent hoax.)

Berry said: "We promoted the image fully confident in the knowledge that everyone was familiar with the original hoax from a couple of years ago.

"We figured that no one would fall for the same joke twice, so the caption was deliberately replicated it word for word so people would get the reference."
